did i find them.?
this is the only small block i own.
so i feel like an idiot.
You've got an 80 to 84 302 there. Not sure what year exactly, you left off the year in the date code (H27 or D30) It was cast either on July 27th of one of the years included between 1980 and 1984. or April 30th (d30) balance factor could be either 28 or 50 oz/in. If you have balancers for both, you can compare them side by side to see which is which. The 50 oz unit has a larger counterweight on both the balancer and the flywheel/flexplate. If in doubt which it needs, remove the oilpan and post the crank casting numbers, someone should be able to tell you which crank it is. Or post a pic of the crank. The 50 oz crank has really small counterweights.
hey baddad
did not know if you re-looked at this.
seems to me to be an early 80 302. with the crank stamp.
going to take the engine back apart this weekend to clean dust out of it and put new assembly lube etc.
getting it ready for install.
sooo
if it looks like the 289 standard trans stuff will fit...i will head that way.
guess if it is not balanced will just take it back aprt unless anyone thinks they have this one figured out.
It's a 50 oz crank. And it's not one of the good ones being it's an early 80's unit. I've seen two of these break in their original applications--- one a Lincoln Town Car, the other in an early 80's F150. Neither was driven hard.
If you can find a late 80's to 01 crank, jump on it. I have two extras but with the shipping they'd run you more than you could get one locally. Last one I bought was thru Advance Auto Parts in a crank kit. It was something like $150 with new bearings to match. Still going strong after two years run time, and with a 4 speed manual banging it from behind. It gets spun daily to 6000.
The early 50 oz 5.0 cranks are the only ones I've ever seen break, all others are bullet proof. The casting quality on the later 50 oz units is so good they almost look like forgings. I've spun one to 7500 and had no problems with it. I don't know what the deal was with the early ones. The cranks for the 255's were hollow and had the same dimensions as the 302 crank, could be some got swapped in these motors by chance at the factory.
checker told me yesterday they had the kits with bearings and all for about 200$
1 week delivery
guess because they think nm is not in the us....
so
will let you know how it turned out......
may put this one further back on my to do list.
since the 289 is still going ok.
little lifter noise but about it.
ran into another project.
does not belong in this post
will be heading to the FE area for a while.
