I have owned several Ford trucks a 88 F150 6 cyl., 87 F150 6cyl., I drive a 97 Ranger Ex Cab 4X4 4.0 6cyl now. And now I have my 77 I was told it has a 351 modified engine can someone explain that to me. I remember the 351 Clevland and Windsor (SP) might not be right sorry. So fill me in on the engine I have in my 77 please.
Thanks
If you do a search on it using the search forum tool up at the top right Im sure youll find lots of info on em...they have been discussed quite a bit here. Also look further down on the lists of forums and youll find one dedicated to that series of engines..thats where youd probably want to go.

The 351M / 400 engines were the V8s used in some 77s, and all 78 79 ford trucks(other than the 460), and the 351M was even used until 82. Before them, the V8s were 360 / 390 (73-76ish)(other than 460s). The 351C was used in some 73-79 Austrailian trucks, and mustangs or cars of the sort. The 351W was a V8 used later model trucks(I want to say 83-96).

Techincally speeking it is wrong.
The 351M isn't actually a Modified(just like he said, if anything the 400 would be).
But you are right, If you say "My truck has a 351 Modified" People will know what you are talking about, even if they know it's wrong or not....
Just to throw this out there... I'd like to know how many people say they have a 351M, but actually have a 400.(when I was looking at buying one of these trucks about 9 out of 10 people had 400s and thought they were 351Ms. Only one actually had a 351M.
It's probably as simple as they needed a way to differentiate the 351M from the 351W and the 351C.
BTW, This is one of the reasons that 'big block' and 'small block' mean nothing in the world of Ford. These are terms used by an inferior auto manufacturer that didn't have enough imagination to come up with more than 2 different engine blocks.

Actually the 351C and it's smaller brother the 302C were used until 1984 in australia, But was never used from the factory in the US in trucks. the 351W although not used in trucks until the 80s was used in cars starting in 1969 and could be found in trucks as early as 1980. the 400 was actually the original of the M blocks and came out 1 yr after the 351C (and originally had the "small block" bell housing) 360s and 390s were used in trucks back in teh 60s up through the mid 70s and the 351M was introduced originally in 1975 but not sure when it first was put into trucks but think it was close to that time
Not true. Stock from the factory they were saddled with some poorly designed emissions controll systems. But they are failry easy to hop up. Hot Rod did a buildup on one several years ago and made good power with it.
