guys,
I have driven many v10 and 8.1's. the 8.1 sets you back in the seat harder, doesn't down****f as much on hills load. doesn't notice the load as much as the 6.8. I will say the 415ci motor is strong but it is still 415 cubes comparing the two is like comparing the dodge hemi 5.7 to ford v10 the cubes favor the v10. HELL the dirt old 460 PULLs harder than the v10 comparing a 97 460, 4.1 E4od to a 02 v10 4.3 4r100. could it be the drive by wire go pedal sure. I have yet to drive a v10 zf 6, 4.3 i'm sure that would out pull a 8.1, 4.1, 5sp allison

Until you drive a properly set up 2v V10 or 3v V10 you are just blowing smoke...

Alot of the other trucks are lifted and so is my 250 (6inch suspension and 3inch body on 38 claw radials). I do have 4:56 gears front and rear and the truck has alot of get up and go. Just wondering what your thoughts on this might be. I just had all my rear U-joints replace and would like to make a good show at least. I don't have any power mods per say except dual exhaust from the Cat back. Most of the oil burners that do well have power programs and the like so they pull like crazy. Do I have at least a shot? Any ideas as to what to expect?

Thanks in advance.
you have no chance in hell of winning.

properly setup?? uuuuhhhh?
ok ok you win I guess the 99, 01,01,03 ,07 have driven all auto's must have ALL had problems I don't think so. Just saying the 8.1 pulls better it just in the size diffrence. Why do SO many guys want to regear thier 10. to get more out of it if me driving a 03 8.1 4.1 alli with a 35hp john deere and a ford with an empty 16' the ford is ALWAYS down shifting and the GM sat at 2300rpms for miles on end UUHHHH?but the v10 has 2 more cylinders and is a ford. You will not find many gm's that regear thier 8.1.
Make no mistake I have 3 fords and love em all my 78 moreso. but for a fair fight ford needs 475 ci's 415 vs 496 is like comparing a 302 to a 390 for pulling I hope you are starting to follow me.

the 3v v-10 is more powerfull then the 8.1 It may have more power then the 2v. I raced a 8.1 on the highway and it was my buddys. He only beat me by 5 feet. Considering that he has more hp torque and weighs alot less then i do. That is sad.

Next Dustin will tell us that the GM gets 13MPH in town and never needs any service...

Hint to you brother Dustin...

I have OWNED all the SuperDuty variants except the 5.4L or the new 6.4L motors and I had a 8.1L (496CI) Allison GM.... What ever slight initial torque advantage the Chevy truck had, was rapidly lost in the very narrow power band and the fuel efficiency was terrible.... Push rod V8s are just too old skool to maintain any relevance in todays modern world..... Going bigger cubes was a bone headed move similar to Dodge going backward in time to the Hemi....

For what it is worth--- the 3v 415 V10 is technically a Hemi too.....

FWIIW#2 More Ford Superdutys on the road by a 6 to 1 ratio over the GM 8.1L ---

There is much better information for the SuperDuty too.... Notice you are here instead of the horrid GM truck web site forums...

Your OPINIONS about gear changes are not based on any empirical facts--- just a pitiful attempt to try and claim there is something wrong with the SuperDuty from the factory....

90% or more of all SuperDuty trucks on the road today have the 3.73:1, 4.10:1, or 4.30:1 that they came with. Of those, 99% are happy with the gear selection.

The SuperDuty is a popular truck, looks beautiful, and lots of folks think they need a lift and bigger wheel/tires to fill in the wheel wells and make them look perfect...

Being able to swap out the 3.73:1 for a 4.10, 4.30, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13, 5.34 set of gears is a good thing and in no way means that the original gears were inferior or wrong---- The owners use of the vehicle changed and he is able to adjust a critical part to make it adapt to the new conditions

Do not think for very long that Chevy truck owners don't change gear sets... you are still talking smack you know nothing about.... and as long as you do, then your personal "seat of the pants" comparison is not too convincing....

At least to me it isn't

Why would someone even compare that ancient boat anchor with a Triton V10?
I can't imagine ANY situation that the 8.1 would outperform a 6.8.

I did agree with you the 8.1 gets about 6mpg in my application where the v10 gets 13mpg, the V10 uses NO oil the 8.1 uses a quart every 650 miles. the v10 has not had a wrench on a truck in 190k. The 8.1 has had 3 alts due to failing bearings and a squeeky belt. and a water pump in 93k miles, we just got in a 07 chevy and have a 06 v10 with 6k miles
ALL i'm saying is that they are gutless. they are GREAT motors otherwise
we have 4 trucks 1 of which we just got.
have driven them in others trucks to.
I am saying that the v10 just doesn't have the cubic inches to be torquey you have to rev the ever living bejesus out of the 415 ci motor where as the 496ci are right at home grossing 16k at 2k rpms
YES the v10 could gross 16k but at about 4500rpms -been there done that. They will both pull a load, just the little motor has to work considerably harder to do so
Disclaimer the 13mpg and 6mpg figures are unloaded wieghts. grossing 16k the drop to about 8 for the v10 and 4.5 for the 8.1 is the light popped on yet

Seriously, have you ever even LOOKED at the torque curve for a V10? The 2-valve put out 80% of it's peak torque at 1000RPM. Yes, that's right, 1000RPM.

The 3-valver puts out even more all over the place.

I don't get it...

This brings back to the forefront something that many here have noticed about the V10, especially the 2-valver.

For whatever reason, if you *****-foot it all the time, when you DO romp on it, it's gutless. If you beat the snot out of it for an hour, it's lively as all heck for days.
