Comes on after a few miles, then goes out after a few more miles, then on again after a few more miles. 92 Explorer all manual. I don't know how to get codes. 170K miles. Runs OK while this is happening.
The best first step in diagnosing this is to get the codes from the computer. vicv mentions going to Autozone. If the Autozoners in your local store know how, they can be a good resource for getting trouble codes. If you want to learn how to do it yourself, then put "Ford EEC-IV self-test" into your favorite search engine and start reading, and/or get a repair manual which will have instructions. There's really no sense in us guessing at what is triggering the CEL when the computer is ready to tell you.
Yeah, you're right K2JJB, pre-ODBII. My bad. For my older cars, Dodge/mitsubishi, I did key on-key off 3 times and read the flashing CEL. For my cars it was 1,2,read flashes, 5,5. 12 meant codes coming next and 55 meant done. Don't know if Ford is the same. I did see somthing about the paper-clip trick but I'll be darned if I can remember where. Best I can do for ya...
Since the light is coming and going, it could be the throttle position sensor. But, by all means, pull the codes first. No sense in throwing money at it until you have a better idea of what it is.
