hi everyone i have a 93 f150 4x4 it was born w/5.0 and e4od when it came time to repower i deciede to go with a 351w the machine shop sujeseted to balance the rotaing assembly, up the compression a little < runs fine on regular gas> put a RV cam and headers so i did. after a year of dealing with minor but very anoying driveablity issues and doing alot of research i decided to go mass-air.
i found a 95 f150 5.0 e4od 4x4 and i have swapped everything electrical from one bumper to the other including the column w/air bag. it starts and runs fine all lights and accessories work perfect!!!! but the O/D light flashes and my scanner says code "639 insufincient input from transmission speed sensor" but the speedo works? the truck drove <shifted> fine before the swap? i have read alot of your articles but havent found a cure for this problem yet that works can anyone help me?
any help/responses will be greatly appreciated thank you
Man, it sure sounds like you've done some work refitting this baby.
Congratulations on getting that all swapped over and put together.
As far as your problem goes, you say everything works good and it runs strong?
I would just put a piece of black tape over that OD light and forget it exists, unless you want to try putting another speed sensor in it. Before you do that, and you've probably already done this, try resetting the codes again.
It may be a tuff problem to run down if that doesn't work.
Oh, by the way, welcome to Ford Truck Forum

Welcome to FTE Matt. I would start out by checking/cleaning/replacing your vehicle speed sensors. On a 95 it is going to be mounted on the rear differential. I believe the 93 should be the same way, assuming that they changed its location when the changed the body style in 93. The old VSS was mounted on the transmission. Use a multimeter on the VSS to make sure that it's getting a voltage.
Good luck with that truck, sounds like you've put your heart and soul into it.

The info in this forum never ceases to amaze me. I need to put the "tape over the warning light", in my trouble shooting notes. I would not have thought of that solution in a million years. I better go write that down right now before I forget.

The VSS is in the same spot in 93 as they were in 95...least the one on my 93 Bronco parts truck is there.I second that notion FMR.Matt, do what Skandocious said by checking it with a multimeter first.....hell it might be somethin stupid n simple like forgetting to plug something in......But Skandocious' title isn't a posting guru for nothin....he and alot of other people really know their stuff and are great at troubleshooting problems.....welcome to the Forums...you'll learn a great deal.
when i say it runs good i should have said in park as well. sorry for any confusion.
when i try to drive it she holds 1st gear till 25-30 and bang it shifts so hard it chirps the tires!
when i changed the wiring for the tanks, vss , and rear lights i kept the vss off the 95. then the 639 code so i put my old one back in, eraesed the codes and tried again nothing. last light i even recalibrated the speedo and still have that one code.its driving me nuts <its raining and i have drive my 06 roush to muddy job site>
i will gheck back with you all tonight have a great day and thank you again
With the hard shifting...that explains the tranny code...on my AODE I purposely intercepted a wire going to my tranny harness in order to get firmer shifts..I can plug it and unplug it anytime...you've probly got a corroded pin somewhere in the tranny harness...if I remember right(without looking under my hood) it's a blue/white wire.....oh yea...to strengthen my observation...my OD light flashes with this particular wire undone as well.....so I'm gonna say corroded terminal or loose wire in the harness.
Makes more sense since you describe the bad shifting. The E4od is totally electronically controled. One bad sensor or connection and it shifts horrible. The flashing OD light and the bad shifts are enough without the code . The VSS is definitly the problem. Might be bad, might be covered with metal pieces from a rear end problem. Let's hope it isn't that one. It also might not be receiving or sending properly due to a corroded terminal. If you have sucessfully done all the other work on this truck, you should be able to track down this gremlin too. Sounds like a fun project. Please write back and let us know what you found, and post some pics of the truck.
Good Luck Frank
My C-6 in my 250 did the same, it turn out to be the switch (nuetral safety) was stuck
so took some brake cleaner, cleaned it real good and wiggled it., never have had this happen again, been nearly two years now.
Hold the phone, you should have told us this before.
Holding 1st for a long time and slamming into 2nd gear with a flashing OD light indicates that the transmission is in "limp mode." Another symptom should be that the transmission will not go into 3rd or OD. The electronically controlled transmission does this when it senses something is wrong in the system, the hard shift is due to the transmission increasing line pressure to minimize damage to a faulting transmission. This happened to me once when I pulled the fuse for the dome light when I was doing interior work (didn't want to drain the battery) and forgot to put it back in when I was done. Turns out, that same fuse controls something related to the transmission, caused my tranny to enter "limp mode." Check all your fuses and make sure they are okay, namely the dome light fuse (#8 - 15amps). If they all check out, I'd have a look at your VSS like I suggested before.
