Smile Fuel Gauge Problems......

When the fuel gauge started malfunctioning it would register correctly for a while and when the cab warmed up it would eventually go to past full. The next cold morning it would work again till it warms up. This last summer it went to past full and stayed there, never moves. Any suggestions as to the possible problems?? If it matters the tank selector switch works fine, and every other gauge functions properly.

This is on a 1996 F250 PSD 2WD.

Thx in advance

I'll take a guess and suggest checking the wires and connections on top of the sending units. Maybe they're shorting out somewhere between the sending units and the gauge.

You didn't say, but I'm assuming the tanks are not full when the guage reads above the full mark. Correct?

Yes thats correct, it dosent matter how much fuel is in the tank, ti always shows past full. The needle never moves.

fuel gauge problem

I dropped my tank and found the fuel line strainer ( looks like an upside-down cone) on the end of the pickup tube had come loose and was floating around in the tank. It eventually impacted the hot wire going to the fuel gauge sensor often enough to break the wire loose from the sensor. This caused the fuel gauge to go past full and stay there. I resoldered the wire to the printed circuit board in the sensor assembly and the fuel gauge works fine.
If the fuel line strainer in the tank comes off you will run out of fuel before the fuel gauge level gets as low as before. I have two tanks and run one dry before I switch to the other so I noticed I was running dry with almost a quarter tank when before it would run below E. The strainer is made of a pliable rubber and slips over the end of the aluminum fuel line. The rubber becomes brittle with age and the strainer fails causing it to fall off. Hope this helps.
