I have a 1991 F-250 with well over 100,000 miles. The truck will not start after sitting over an hour with adding some starter fluid. (It feels like the diesel is leaking back). Also, when you shift gears, the truck's rpms will decrease to a degree that the truck will die. I can drive the truck as is, but I wouldn't want anyone else chancing the risk. I have had several mechanics look at as well, and no one can seem to find the problem. Do you have any suggestions to try. Thanks.
These are among the simplest diesels in recent history, and yet, its amazing how hard it can be to find a machanic that cares enough to know how they work. Weclome to the IDI diesel forum.
Ok, If I read correctly, you have two sypmtoms. the first is that the truck does not like to restart after a one hour wait from a hot shutdown.
And the second, is the truck tends to stall when you let off the throttle.
The second sounds a lot like an injector pump problem, mine did this as well a little while ago. The fix for me was to run some ATF in the tank to clean and lubricate the injection system. I would fill the fuel filter with 50% ATF as well to get a better affect sooner.
I feel that the two may be related, so try the ATF first.
An air leak could also be playing a role, but usually (but not always) an air leak will cause cold start issues as well as hot start. The classic symptom, is an easy start, followed by a stall after 10-30 seconds.
my 6.9 85 F350 was having the hot start problem and running rough I ran dieselkleen in it and then had to add an electric pump I think the cam lobe that runs the lift pump is worn down to where the mechanical pump isnt really putting out. just running the dieselkleen helped an awful lot
There is a Tech service bullitin (TSB) re stalling when clutch is pushed in.......or coming to a stop. Basically it refers to a rusted/crud filled IP and gives instructions how to check..... it does suggest use of a good fuel additive ie Stanadyne/Power service etc...... if repair is possible. Click on my name and email me ask for: IP TSB
