Question for dinosaurfan
Hi DF, have a favor to ask. When you have time would you mind checking out your 390 cranks? Am interested in the rear flange, do any of them have the extra hole like the 428 cranks?

Barry, yes, they do. Some of them at least. I have two 390 cranks, a 67 and a 70, that have the square notch AND the round hole in the flange. I also have a 410 mercury crank that has the square notch and the round hole in the flange, but all of the 3.98 cranks that I've seen so far also have the extra counterweight in front of the #3 main, and none of the 352/360 or 390 have that. I have also seen some 390 cranks ('63-'65 ?) that have the square notch AND the half moon notch together. I have a '69 360 crank out in the barn that looks like this as well. Just as an interesting side note, my 391 FT crank has a smooth flange with no holes or notches at all. DF

Thanks for taking the time to check all that stuff out DF, much appreciated! I guess I’m gonna forget about trying to identify FE cranks by the rear flange!
I’ve read on another board that some of the 3.98 cranks don’t have that extra little deeley bopper counterweight.
