Question Peg Board Hooks

I am in the process of building work benches & shelves in my garage and have a question about peg board hooks. I want to use pegboard for hanging tools as I always have but I am trying to figure out a way to attach these hooks to the pegboard so that when you remove a tool from them the peg comes out of the pegboard and falls to the floor. I once had some of these hooks that had a strip of plastic that went through the adjoining holes to keep the peg in place but have not been able to locate any of these. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I thank you.

I'm not really sure where you could find hooks like that. But I'm curious why you would want to do this?

Why, I get disgusted when I remove a wrench from the pegboard and the peg comes off the pegboard. I want the pegs to stay in the pegboard.

Oh that makes sense, the wording in your OP is a little funky and I misunderstood, sorry. Maybe you could use some sort of wire to tie the back of the hook to the pegboard through the holes in the pegboard?

Best way I can put it, is not all hooks are created equal. I bought some pegs at one hardware store and they fit unbelieveably tight. They dont even budge. I went back for more later, and this time, they all fit loose, and are REALLY annoying. I guess what I'm saying is shop around for hooks with the same size wire are the holes in your board. I think 1/4" is the standard hole size. Seems like most hooks I've seen are 3/16". I think the 1/4" hooks are listed as "heavy duty" and are, of course, higher priced. Hope this helps. I'll see if I can find a source on the net, but shipping will add up quick.

I stand corrected. Standard hole size is 9/32".
Try http://www.mcmaster.com/
Search for pegboard, They list "light" wire and "Heavy" wire hooks.

You can try going to a store and seeing if they have any they would be willing to sell. I know the store that I work at had a bunch of the ones they use (really good quality) laying around that they didn't need and were trying to sell them.

Years ago when I had hinged pegboards I used hooks that had a threaded shank that goes through the pegboard, with a built-in welded washer on the front. I had to add a washer on the back, and a nut. After a few tore through the pegboard, (pipe wrenches were hung), I used fender washers on back to spread the load. I got a box of these somewhere on the surplus market, but maybe you can find something similar.

I've heard you can use a glue gun on the lower peg when you put it in.

Hawk1953, you had just what I was looking for! I thank you all that responded. I also thought about using a hot glue gun.

another option (and probably cheaper) is to push the hooks through, then use a wire tie to hold the hook in place using one hole on each side of the hook to put the tie through.

I bought mine from Lowe's. They work great. They also have a huge selection.

I got plastic pegboard from this place:

http://www.hookstore.com/panels.htm

They work really well.. you slide the hook in and then there is a "locking" type piece that holds it firm against the pegboard.
