My truck blew a spark plug today, stripping the threads from the head in the process. After much searching it appears that Time-Sert is a highly recommended alternative to replacing the head.
I can't find a website that will quote me a price on the parts I need. Many list the Time-Sert kits but don't quote prices.
For those that have used Time-Sert, how much did the kit cost? Did you do the job yourself or have a shop do it? If a shop did it how much did the job cost?
Additionally I found a Ford Techical Service Bulletin that lists "lock-n-stich" as the Ford authorized fix for the problem. Has anyone ever used that product?
The dealer didn't mention either of these fixes...I imagine that's because these are much cheaper alternatives and they won't make as much money doing them.
Thanks! That looks like the kit I need. I'll have to do some more research before pulling the trigger but that gives me some good info on the price.
I wasn't terribly happy hearing about a $3,300 replacement of the cylinder head.
If I remember correctly there isn't a lot of room on the 2 plug holes furthest back on the drivers side. Not sure if I'll be able to tackle that on my own or if I'll have to farm it out.
I've done a couple of 5.4 heads with timesert and no problems as I said before. As far as cost goes I have no clue, got my kit for free from my brother. Its way better than pulling a head to be certain.
Just found a guy at a speed shop here in town that will do the job. He's done a bunch of them in the past, says it will take 3 to 4 hours of labor at $85/hr. My truck will be towed to his shop today. Thanks to all for the input.
