I'm getting ready to put the suspension back together in my 54 and was curious if anyone sells a rebuild kit IE: Ball joints, Tie rods, Etc. I know i can go to the parts house but was wondering if there was a kit available maybe with polyurethane bushings and such.
can't remember which magazine ??? CT or CCT has an article this month on Volare rebuild... might be a source for parts there... haven't had to read it yet
thanks Chuck,,
you got it up before I got home to look.
I haven't had time to look but Bob is the Volare guru of the world. He's done more than anyone I've ever heard of. Although he and I have a disagreement about how to fit a 460 over one... he is still the subframe expert.
This is a topic near and dear to my heart right now since I just bought a chassis with a Volare IFS installed. I am taking it one step further though...I am not real satisfied with the "just offset the engine 2 inches" approach to the huge steering box. I want a nice clean rack and pinion solution but I am finding that they are not as simple to find as many other items. Horror stories abound concerning bumpsteer, etc. There is a shop in northern CA that makes a complete kit for $595...it sounded a bit high at first but after some looking around it may not be as high as I once thought. I haven't bought it yet but the time is rapidly approaching where I will need to make a decision.
When I rebuild the IFS I will be using Energy Suspension components...I have used them on other projects and there's no going back to rubber after you've had polyurethane.
There's really no reason to be disatisfied with the engine offset. It is hardly noticeable and even the original Chrysler engines mounted with those suspensions were offset a little. The only clue that mine is offset two inches to the right is where the mechanical fan is located in relation to the radiator. If you used an electric fan you would have to look hard to even see it. However, it you do go the rack and pinion route I may be interested in your steering box since mine is leaking...
