wood bed finish

The oak bed on my 49 is beginning to fade and I wondered if any one had an idea how to care for these, thought about sanding the varnish and appyling tung oil.

I would sand off the varnish and apply spar varnish. It's made for exterior use. Jag

If the varnish is fading as in clarity, you'll more likely have to strip the old varnish off. Even if you sand it and put a coat of new varnish, the old varnish will still be discolored or dull and that's what you'll see with the new varnish, with the exception that it will be dull-shiney. I used a marine varnish which was recommended by a boat shop. I figured if it withstands salt water and abuse on a lake, it'll work on my truck bed.

Although I haven't started this phase of the project yet; I will probably use a tung oil product. The varnish will eventualy blister, then you've got to sand it down to bare wood to get an even finish for whatever you apply after. The oil you just re-apply. If you get it done to bare wood; then your choices are varied. My too sense only.
