I just purchased a 05 F350 and am in the process of changing all filters. Should I stick with the rather pricey stock filter or buy an aftermarket type that is reusable? I plan on keeping the truck a long time. I will proabbly add some type of tuner in the future ( when money allows) The truck will be mostly street driven and pull a 10,500 lb trailer occasionaly.
If an aftermarker filter is recommended what type is good. Thanks for your help.
most of the guys on here recommend just using the stock filter until you surpass 500rwhp, when it comes time for me to replace mine it will be getting a stocker in there again. if you do go with an aftermarket one the general consensus is to stay as far away from K&N as you can, AFE stage 2 is the recommended for aftermarket filters
Stick with the OEM Donaldson filter with the Blue synthetic media. FYI no need to change the air filter until the filter minder (located on the air box) registers it is time. The OEM Donaldson filter holds up to 8-lbs of dirt and can last up to 80K miles.
Don't forget... when you change your Air Filter you will need to do the following...
Pull the Cab.
Pull the Engine.
Remove all skin from your knuckles.
Learn some additional four letter words.
So... you should wait as long of an interval as possible and buy the best, most durable filter money can buy! I love my PSD and would not trade it for any other diesel, but Ford blew it on this one. (it did not have to be this hard to change)
Actually... there is some good instructions in the Tech Folder on how to change it by un-bolting and un-hooking some various componets... do not try to just undo the clamps and muscle it out.
ryan,,, that was funny...
i've got aftermarket, so i'm not sure what's involved in changing the factory one, but i have heard lots of people complain about what a PITA it is supposed to be.
takes me 3 minutes to take mine off, then i go clean it out and let it dry, oil it, and another couple minutes to put it back in.
BTW, does anyone know if i can get the AFE pro7 or other similar dry media filter to fit my airaid intake, i'm tired of having to oil my filter.
I'm still trying to find that out too LvTitan. I've emailed AFE, and PM'ed their rep that is a member here, and I still haven't got an answer. If I find out I'll try to remember to let you know.
Where does this "you don't need an aftermarket air filter until you have over 500hp" claim come from? I haven't seen any facts on this and was just looking to better understand this claim. thanks.

The claim that a stock air box supplies more air than the 6.0 can use until you reach 500+RWHP comes from the guys who race the 6.0 and build 6.0 race motors. They have done numerous on track tests and tests on the dyno. If you do a search you can find the posts with the info.

Search "air filter" or "intake". You will have about a years reading. Numerous tests of CFM flow and CFM required to make said HP has been researched and pretty much determined that a stock filter flows all the air required to make up to 500 HP.
