I've found a complete '97 460 with 69k on it on ebay for my 88 F250 4X4. Were there any major differences between them that will prevent this from being a drop-in deal, or should I be looking for an older engine?
the heads are different so you can't use your carb and intake from the 88 on the 97. they won't match up. the 97 is a fuel injected engine. also the distributors are different.
you will have to use the heads, intake and carb from the 88 on the 97 block, but other than that everything else is the same.
My 88 is speed-density EFI. First year of production. Mostly I was wondering if maybe they went to mass-air or changed balance or something else I'm not aware of.
I venture to guess the later engine used mass air. It is better to have sequential efi instead of 'bank firing', and you should see a mpg or two better economy too... There are lay-on harnesses out there to add the proper wiring to your injectors and O2 sensor (likely you will need an extra one) by simply re-pinning your computer harness, but you will also need the later computer for the '97 efi.
I heard from those who have done the upgrade found a noticeable improvement in throttle response and power delivery.
You will have to decide if you want to run the engine with your stock 88 electronics.
The only ones to get MAS AIR were 96-97 California. I have herd but not seen Massachusetts got it also. I know that California got MAS AIR I have pictures in my gallery to prove it. All other states stayed bank fired speed density. All 93 and up heads had larger valves and better flowing ports. I have herd but not seen that 93 and up intakes were beter. All Ford MAS AIR systems were sequential and all speed density were bank fired.
It's a shame the MAF system didn't get spread around the board like I thought it did... Sheesh, even the last couple years of the Tempo (93-94) went to Mass Air! (I'm actually contemplating the switch-over too for my Tempo! lol) I call it "Tempo-Tantrum", a work in progress.
i was very surprised that when i went after a oil leak in my 97 ( had to be close to the last 460 powerd crew cab) . We went for what we thought was a bad real seal, of course. but was oil pan gasket. when i got the engine up hi enough to change the gasket had my mech. friend come and look and he was surprised how the bottom part of the engine like block etc. had not changed from the 70's. all the changes appear to be on top of the engine. love the truck. even at 6 miles to the gallon pulling my 30' car trailer.
where are you located? i bought a 89 460 thinking I could use the heads off of it for my 93. not working out as easily as I had hoped. If I end up buying a rebuilt head (see my previous posts) I will be selling what I have. I bought the 89 460 as a "complete" motor. but have pulled the intake and heads off to use on the 93, so the engine is in pieces right now, but still is "complete" minus the gaskets you'll need to put it back together...
I meant to say I pulled the intake off to get to the heads, which is all I planned on using, but they are not the same. I had not planned on using the intake, just the heads. I really have no idea what I'm doing, and my mechanic is a GM guy so he's not sure either... so, if I can't get the heads to work, I'll have all the parts for the 89 engine if you're still looking...

I had the same oil pan leak. I bought a one piece neoprene rubber gasket from Ford and installed it... I had to jack the motor up to do it, and the sucker still leaked at the back! I could not even see the rear part of the gasket to align it properly, so that is probably what happened. I intend the pull the engine the next time I change that... The front was easy to get to, but still a little tricky to set the gasket on place, so you can imagine the back being even more difficult...
yeah
this oil pan thing in these hi boys was a week project.
standard shop lifts wont get engine out unless you drop the front end or dig a pit.
tore up the 200$ hi pres. fuel lines.
cause
book said you did not have to free them.
had no problem at all with the gasket.
still put a little rtv in the corners even though it said not to.
the engine has to be a full foot abover the cross member. to do it right.
but no more leaks.
ps
never put mercon v in these things no matter hwta parts guys say.
My 76 is not a highboy; It is an F150. I always use Type 'F' in my C6, never any problems... Never used anything else in any of my C6 transmissions.
There was a discussion about this before on this forum...
