Quick paint question (easy)
Quick paint question (easy)
I have a color picked out for one of my bronc's. It is a chevrolet HHR 2007 color, and it is called golden teal metallic. I just wondered if this being such a new color, if it is available in a single stage paint, as opposed to a base/clearcoat. I also was wondering about what kind of paint to get as I am on a really tight budget. Anyone with any kind of input, I would love to hear it.
How much experience do you have spraying, and do you have a booth? Metallic will be tougher to spray in single stage, and lighter blues and silvers are one of the tougher to spray without mottling, and you will have to live with how sprayed, because very little buffing could be done without disturbing the metallic. Not impossible if you have a well setup good spraying gun, and know the proper method to help even metallic in a singlestage while maintaing good gloss as well if its spraying a bit blotchy. But with things that have potential to go wrong painting, and likely hood to get at least some dirtnibs, I'd just bite the bullet and spray a urethane base clear, which will mean better repairability in the future, metallics a bit easier, and able to buff out minor flaws, and a clearcoat adding some depth and uv protection to the color. Some urethane clears are not all that expensive, and a better system then enamel.
I have sprayed enough omni, but came to the conclusion there are other lower priced lines in around the same price range that are better. Omni is a converted enamel base I believe, and a slower system, so should allow good time before clearing.
If you are painting the whole thing where your not trying to get a color match, see if any suppliers carry either the utech line or pro-spray base now handled by usc. Not sure how their clears are, I've been using southern polyurethanes universal clear. A good clear in about the same price range as omni and nason. Coverage with the utech or prospray will likely be better then the omni, and probably a should be a better base as well. But still would be a good idea to have it all one color of primer or sealer prior to base. The price of paint today is another reason an expensive but great atomizing and efficient gun soon pays for itself with material savings.

Omni has a flash time of 15 minutes, which means continious spraying from start to finish by the time you start from one end to the other all the way to the last clear coat.
Ive stuck with Omni as far budget paints for the fact it has a much better coverage than other's ive sprayed, not near as transparent and the quailty is great for the prices,PPG makes it and ive have never seen or heard of a problem with it yet.
SPI(southern polyurethanes incorporated) is an excellent choice but the colors are VERY limited,Barry doesnt have a match for the HHR teal code but the clear is about the best out there in my opinion,it lays nicely and a high quality clear.
As far as spray guns.you get what you pay for but you can get good quailty spray guns used on eBay ,ive used a Devilbiss Finishline II for quite a while before i bought 2 SATA's for the basecoat/clearcoats and worked great for the price,i payed 130.00 for the kit with a 1.4 1.5 1.7 and 2.0 tips with it and bought an extra 1.3 tip i used for clears because ive found thats a much better tip size for my preference of spraying clears and 1.4 for basecoat..
Devilbiss has now replaced the finishline II with a III model and some stores still have the finishline II at a clearance price.
Biggest factor is do your research and "lay your ducks in a row" so to speak before attacking the job and you will come out with a job well done..there is no shortcuts to a paint job that you will be satisfied with in the end,90% of a paint job is the work involved before the finish paint.

I have an accuspray hvlp gun-it has always shot like a dream. I have a ton of experience shooting paint-mostly tables of paccar parts with an old devilbiss jga. I have only shot a couple cars, but they came out pretty good, shop booth, not professional booth. I was thinking about having an acquaintance shoot it for me, I'll have to find out if he has a booth. He shot his truck, it's black, and it looks good. I love the great info I have been given, more than I expected. That's awesome. This is why I love this site so much, thanks a million!
