Was just wondering if anyone has a vibration in there truck between 50 and 60 mph .Just had a new drive shaft installed didn't cure the problem .Now I'm looking at the TSB 05-13-1 ,has anyone here had to shim there rearend like this any help would be appreciated ...Thanks
f s 150 I haven't heard about the parking brake being a problem . How do you go about checking it, I never use the parking brake but will check it ..Thanks
Is it a constant vibration, or sporadic? When the vibration happens, slightly apply the E brake and release it and observe any changes. The rim on the hanging side will be noticeably warmer than the others.
I've got an 06 F-150 reg cab. Great truck except that when I put new 20's on it I came to realize terrible vibration and steering wheel shimmy (at all speeds). I have taken the truck to a Ford dealership and was blown off and went to the place I bought the wheels/tires 4 times for balancing. They did everything - road force balance too and still the steering wheel shimmy. They said it's not a balance issue - it's due to my stiff suspension and that maybe it will go away over time. That's nice!
Actually, at 14K miles the Ford dealership turned my rotters. What??? A new truck and the rotters need turned! I've owned a lot of trucks and I have never experienced this! It has only 17K on it. ???????
I'm so disatisfied, I really don't know what to do. I may have to sell my truck, the discomfort and shimmy is that bad! It's absolutely disgusting! Any comments, suggestions or help? Please.
boatnut, are your rims chrome? Do they have the exact bolt pattern for your lugs or are they generic bolt pattern rims that use washers to center up on the lugs correctly? 20's are huge rims especially if you are using a low profile tire. When you enlarge the rim and keep the overall diameter of the rim/tire the same you are taking a lot of cushioning out of the ride of the vehicle. Have you played with your air pressure? A difference of a few psi makes a huge difference. Remember, check your pressure cold! After you've been driving around all day and the suns been beating on your black tires, the psi will be several pounds higher. Go run down the interstate at 70 for 30 minutes and your talkin 7 psi higher. So check your tires when their cold. Less psi more ride comfort. Which rims did your truck come with stock? Because if your truck is set up for 245/60/17 inch rims and you've got something like 30" overall diameter. Then you slap a set of 20" rims with low profile tires on it... good luck getting a smooth ride out of any vehicle. Much less a truck.
This may be elementary stuff that everybody already knows. But... maybe not.

Ford puts 20" rims on some F150's. They definitely will give a ride that is more harsh, but it shouldn't shimmy. Are you sure you do not have a bad rim or tire? Did they do a runout test on the rim? New tires are more often bad than new rims, but you could have a rim that is not true. What tires are you running? It might be worth it to pay another reputable shop to look at it in depth. If you have a shimmy at all speeds I would care to bet you have either a bad tire or rim. Usually a balance problem will only show up at higher speeds unless it is way off. Also, do you still have modulation upon braking? Many times when rotors are turned the warping comes back and the only way to remedy the problem is to replace the rotors. Warped rotors can contribute to a shimmy problem as well.
Put the old rims and tires back on, if you don't get the vibration, you know its the wheel, tire combination.
That is what I was thinking. If you read his original post, the vibration came after he put the wheel/tire combo on. But if he still has the originals, it still would not be a bad idea to rule it out completely.
F S 150 my viberation is sporadic never no when its gonna start have kinda noticed it at different speeds the last couple of day was only happening between 50 and 60mph now I can kinda feel it at around 30 mph .I took it to my mechanic today he pulled both my rear tires off looked at both e brakes on both sides of the truck both sides where working properly, with no signs of hanging up .Do you know of anyone who has had to have there rearend shimed like in this TSB 05-13-1?
I have an 04 that has developed a slight vibration at 65 -70 mph. I still have the original Michelin tires with about 42k mi on them and have narrowed it down to one tire by switching front to rear one pair at a time. I have had the tire rebalanced and it is no better, so I'm figuring its a belt issue or something in the tire. It is worn evenly so I don't see a problem with the truck. I'll be putting on winter tires in a couple of months and tossing these so I'm not worried about it.
If you still have your original tires you may want to try this.
My 06 4x4 had a very pronounced vibration when I first bought it. Ithas 18" BFGoodrich AT's on it. The vibration was associated with the rear of the vehicle. It would only vibrate when the tires were cold. The whole bed would shake rather violently. I took it to Ford, and after the first go of balance, rotate, index....ect, the truck still had the vibration. This was at 400 miles. I took it back and they really got into the vehicle. They kept it for 4 days, drove it in a variety of conditions, and found 3 of the 4 tires to be out of tolerance and the drive shaft vibration frequency was out of limits. They replaced all the above and I have been vibrations free since. I now have over 11000 mile on it and am terrifed to get the tire balanced or rotated. I think I'll let them stay on the corners there at until I need to replace them.
