Hate to complain, but my steering lately feels "too easy" if that makes sense?
I have a 2000 exp with 70K miles and it is in great shape. My wife mostly drives it, but when I got in it, the steering felt "loose". It is responsive and there is no play in it, but it lacks feel. Is this common? Maybe I just haven't driven it in a while. The tires are in excellent shape and aired properly. She said it felt a bit easy too.
Any thoughts on this? Could something be worn, something to check, an adjustment? Or should I just "enjoy it" ha ha!. Thanks!!!
Sean

I think you should lift it and check the steering and suspension components for too much play. Ball joints, tie rod ends, pittman arm---all play a part. I don't mess around with potential problems like steering or braking.
I think he is feeling what I notice with my GF's Expy. It is too much power assist. My Jeep steering is tight, more road feel, and more effort to turn the wheel.

My 98 always felt funny from the day I got it. I am used to it and it dosent bother me anymore.
This is a pretty common complaint on the older models. My '98 felt this way since the day I got it with 30k miles. It seems to be a characteristic of the steering/suspension and not necessarily due to wear. At the recommendation of folks on this forum I put a steering stabilizer on a few years ago and it made a noticeable difference in stability, especially on the freeway and in windy conditions. Can't remember what brand it was (maybe rough country), but install was pretty easy bolt on - no drilling or welding.
Checek your tire pressures. I notice a huge improvement in handling when I have tire pressures at 32 psi front and 35 rear. If I have mismatched tire pressures my Expy is all over the road.
I noticed the sloppy steering in our 1998 Exped starting on day one. It seems way too sensitive. There is just no road feel at all and very little resistance in the steering. It is like one of the video arcade car games! We have six other trucks with normal driving. When I get back into the Exped and drive on the highway it wanders all over the road. The lightest movement on the wheel sends the truck careening all over the road. All steering components have been checked out by the dealer. I run 17 inch Michelein "E" rated tires in 265 width. I am about at the point of attemptingto disable the power steering to see if it has any better road feel. If I turn to get something out of the back seat thr Exped is another lane without any sensation of the wheel turning.
I cannot recall if there is a sterring damper. If not I will try one for sure.
I thought that my 97 Expedition had something really wrong. I am still going to have it checked out to be sure, but I am amazed at how loose the steering is. As a previous poster mentioned, the slightest movement will cause me to move all over my lane. Even trying to knock the ash off my cigar or reach for the MP3 player can be an adventure.
Yeah, my 98 is the same way. You really have to focus on the road at all times. I've gotten used to it by now but I can certainly understand that it might feel wierd for someone who hasn't driven the truck in a while.
