I am using lacquer paints, rattle cans. Sprayed basecoat and clearcoat. I've wetsanded with 1000 and 2000. It's nice and smooth but there's still some orange peel. How coarse can I wet sand this to remove the orange peel? I know it'll never be a deep gloss like OEM, but whatever I can do to make it look a little better.
Hi how many coats of clear do you have on and is it clear from a rattle can or sprayed on with a paint gun. If its out a a rattle can that it much thinner than the stuff you put in a paint gun. If you have already sanded with 1000 and 2000 i would try to buff that first and becarefull not to burn through. It all comes down to what kind of clear and how many coats are put on.
you may just have to sand more if it does not buff out. but be careful not to sand or buff through. if it is close to a body line or edge, pait is usually thiner there and it will sand or buff through fast.
I also spray paint cleared my truck. I did three coats of clear, but I stopped wetsanding at about 1000 grit. I would suggest going over it again with the 2000. After that, apply some rubbing compound and remove it with a cloth, followed by a wool pad buffer. You have to be careful to not rip through it, and the methods you can use on real paint don't apply to spraypaint.
Also, I found that liquid turtle wax makes spraypaint shine better than stuff like maguires. I don't like turtle wax, but for my ford it is apparently the stuff
Well, I got a spray gun and used the Duplicolor Paint System clear. I used two quarts on the bed. It comes premixed, no thinning. I used 800 on one side and a couple different grade polishes with a polisher. I still need to do the other side and I can see that I need to get the finish completely smooth before I buff it out to get the best shine. I'll probably go back and sand the first side again.
Now that I've got a spray gun, I'll do the tailgate the proper way, with the proper paints. None of this lacquer (input word of choice).
