I ran a new wire and am now getting 13 volts at the coil. It slightly improved the problem but definietly did not fix it. I am going to swap out my pertronix on Monday when the parts store manager gets in because I am almost sure that is it. THE ONLY THING I have not swapped out in the ignition system is the ignitor and the plugs. The plugs are gapped at about .045 and were running fine at this setting and they are less than 3 months old. Ant other idea besides the ignitor. My neighbors mallory points replacement module just went out also but that was a long story and definitely his fault.
I just called pertronix and the only thing I can say is WOW! The guy was extremely helpful. We didn't figure out the problem but he brought some new ideas to mind. I measured the voltage from the module to the distributor base plate. He said it should be about .2 ohms and it was. I explained what it was doing and what I have checked/replaced. He said it was definitley ignition. Most of the times the units will either work great or fail completely. He said that it was possible my module was bad and that I should try to exchange it at the store I bought it at or if they would not do it to send it in and they would be more than happy to send me a new one and examine the old module. He also wanted me to call back monday and follow up with him. That my friends is better than the customer service I am used to. He wasn't at all afraid to admit that the module was possibly the problem. I'll see what happens monday.
Good for you Sean. Hope that gets you going. I would like to see what you truck till do at the track with your changes. I had mine out for testing on the 13th. Went well. Have more changes to do. But the truck will be getting close to the 12 second renge pretty quick. Good luck with the ignition. Tony
I was thinking today and though about the new autozone dizzy I just bought. I though it could be possible the vaccum advance wasn't working correctly under load causing the pop so I said what the heck, I'll just exchange it since its free. Now it runs great. Planning on going to the track friday. I am confident it will be in the mid 13's at least. It pulls way harder than it did before.
That is cooler than any chevelle or camaro you will ever see! I'll try and get some pics if I go to the dragstrip friday. I tried to take a look at those tires you have but something was blurring my vision. BTW what is with the roll bar? Is this there because you want the extra crash protection or did you just get the truck that way? It looks cool but also heavy. Might want to try a run without it unless you put it there for a reason of course.
Hey rat
heres a suggestion for you. I dont swear by any electronic ignition. If you break down, YOU BREAK DOWN. whereas if you ran say, a mallory dual point like me (although i have been having chronic condeser burnout from possibly the wrong coil ),it makes my 390 run like a raped ape. Its been on the truck now for over a year and i have yet to replace a point set. In addition, the thing winds out to appx 6000 without point float/backfire! Cant say the same (my experience with those ole durasparks!) something to think about. summit racing has a great deal on em too; somewhere in the neighborhood of 180.00 bucks!
It was on there when I bought the truck 12 years ago. I have just never taken it out. You may be right it is kind of heavy. May be I will take it out this week. But if the truck gets to 7.99 et it will required to have a roll bar. I guess I could always put it back in. I also had the hood removed for the quick pass. That had to take at least 100 pounds off. .... BTW The new name my buddy gave the truck is "THE PAINT SHOP BOYCOTT".........LOL
