cracked heads
just put freeze plugs in my 71 390 the truck has been sitting for a while and i thought that it had just rusted the plugs out but it must have frozen because the head is cracked.what are my best options i really dont have money right now for a complete rebuild and replace the heads to or can heads still be found at junk yards that are worth rebuilding if anyone can help i really need it

Autozone sells cheap rebuilt heads. I have no idea on quality but for about 15 bucks you can have them pressure checked. I want to say $250 for a set. Be sure and check the block for cracks very thoroughly also. "Freeze Plug" is just a fancy name for the little thing that covers up a hole since they will hardly ever save a block from the ice monster.

Thanks for the info, Im not sure what im going to do. I have another truck with either a 390 or a 360 im not sure which but I might try and look at rebuilding that motor. What are some of the places I need to look for cracks on the block or just everywhere.

I’ve seen a lot of cracking going on between the freeze plugs on the sides of the block. Also likes to crack on the rear of the block, driver’s side. Pull off the intake because it most always cracks on the cylinder bank in the lifter valley.
