I found what the salvage yard owner says is a 360, and it looks like a 360, but there are a couple things that are stumping me. First, the engine has a harmonic balancer. I understood that 360's were internally balanced. Second, the oil filter is horizontal rather than vertical. It is currently in a 73 pickup, so I can't read the casting numbers on the block. I'll admit that other than those two items it looks like a 360/390 (which I need). What is your take?
Bill, all FEs came with a vibration damper. The damper is just a rubber-mounted inertia ring that smoothes out torsional vibrations or harmonics of the crank in motion.
Being externally balanced means there is an additional offset weight hung on the crank outside of the engine case. Sometimes the offset weight is just on the rear of the crank, sometimes both the rear and the front.
The oil filter mount has to be horizontal for a truck, otherwise the filter would hit the crossmember.
Sounds like a typical truck 360. Try to get the casting number of the block. It is on the passenger side by the front, under the alternator.
Thanks Barry. I'll try to crawl underneath and get a look at the casting numbers. It's getting down to the wire. The only other 390 in town is already bored .080 over.
The 390 that I pulled from my truck (block cracked) did not have a vibration damper like this one, which is about 2" thick. It only had a pulley. My old block also had a vertical oil filter, which was a real b!tch getting in and out due to the crossmember like you mentioned.
Hey Bill, the thing you are talking about with only the pulley IS a damper too. It’s the earlier pre-’68 style which is much thinner then the later ones and has a built-in pulley. You can use either one but make sure you use all the matching pulleys and brackets so all the belts line up.
