Well, I just spent a week towing our 3000 LB trailer around. Towing I miss my standard!!!
First, I need to fix my tranny shifting!!!! But I will post about that in a different post!
I found we did a lot of windey up hill / down hill roads ( Vancouver Island ) and I found that the tranny kept putting me at about 1300 to 1400 RPMs, now thats fine and all, but I found that I make MUCH more power at 1800 to 2500 RPMs. I found that some of the hills were too much for where the tranny wanted me, and I had to manually down **** to second a few times, and even first once....
Coming up real soon I want to do injectors ( 160cc single shots with nozzles ) OR big oil...
I eventually want to do both, but $$$ are only so available for truck mods...
So bang for my buck which one will be my best choice???
Its was not just in OD.... It would do it in Drive, and as I said, I had to slow down very slow for almost a 180* turn, and when I went to accelerate again it went for 2nd gear at 1300 RPMs, and I could not get it going well enough up the steep hill, I had to manually select 1st to gut up it without lugging the engine and sky rocketing the EGTs
When I had big oil put on with just my stock injectors, there was a noticeable increase in mid and top end power. The grunt I had down low just maintained throughout the RPM range. If you eventually plan on injectors, I think BO makes a great base for them. If you have to choose, I'd definately go with a BO system first. You'll see immediate benefits and have the foundation for a stronger setup down the road.
I tow a 14,000 lb trailer with stock tuning, ZF-6 and never have to floor the throttle until I get into 4th or OD. I can start out from a dead stop at the bottom of a mountain pass and accelorate right up to speed.
I say that because I'm reading your description and it sounds like you have some problems with your engine that need to be addressed before you start throwing big injectors in or whatever. Even with 3.73 gears, that 3000 lb trailer should seem no bigger than a wheelbarrow behind you.
I don't think I've ever towed 3k lbs my trailers all weigh about 2400 lbs and tows them like empty can excelerate from stop up 8% grade and be in 3rd easy in less than a half mile probly 4th if I stood on it a little
pulling same hill with 7 to 10k lbs still no problem getting to 3rd
I do have lower gears and tires but think a bit less in mods
