Looking for a part, maybe someone can help. Need a fender alignment bracket, the rear one on the firewall, on the passenger side.
I know mid-fifty has some stainless ones that bolt on, but I'd like a plain ol' steel one just like factory that I can weld on. New or used, don't care. No luck in junkyards in my neck of the woods.
Get a piece of round rod, heat the ends and flatten them, and drill a hole through it. I assume they are round. Truthfully, I never looked. If they are flat..that is even easier.
Brian_B, thanks for replying, but I have the alignment rods, just missing one bracket off the firewall. Its a formed piece with a number of compund curves, and made of steel, maybe 1/8". It's spot-welded to the firewall and under the cowl on my 56.
I suppose I could make one, but it'd be a whole lot of cutting, welding, and I don't have access to a brake that could handle it. The mid fifty ones look different than the stock ones, they are fomed in a brake and very flat and angular.
Oh sorry. Maybe somone will have one from a junk cab or something. I didn't realize there was a bracket up under there. I have not had mine apart (yet).
Are you talking about the kinda triangular piece that is welded to the firewall under the back edge of the fender that the last bolt on the fender bolts to? If so, I bought a pair of them in plain steel from Mid Fifty just a couple months ago.
AXracer,
no, there are two firewall-mounted fender alignment brackets, one on each side of the wiper motor, up high and they are spot welded to the firewall and have a tab that is spot welded underneath the cowl.
So I'm looking for for the passenger side mount. PO drilled it out and removed it for some reason.
The fender adjustment rods mount to them and then the rods attach to the front alignment mounts that are on top of the hood latch panel, out on the ends near where the fenders and the hood latch panel meet.
I'll try to take a pic or find a pic of one to post.
I just went out with a flashlight and looked, and have both sides. You can have the pass. side or both, if needed. Problem: I don't own a spot weld cutter, and am afraid of boogering them up with a grinder or cutoff wheel. I am not a skilled metalworker, is there some other way of removing them? Jim
Usually drilling the spotwelds out with a 1/4" bit then popping it loose with a stiff putty knife hammered in between the layers works well. The holes are no problem, give you a place to rosette weld them back on.
I'm probably going to be removing mine and bringing the alignment rods to a new bracket in the center, the OEM driver's side rod will not clear the PB booster.
Wack it with a hammer a couple times, they pop right off. They're not on there very well. A couple smacks, and the pop off with out damaging them. I've popped several off that way, haven't damaged one yet, and it pops the weld with out killing the firewall too.
