I'm looking to build front and rear Double tube bumpers out of 2 1/2 inch tubing or pipe. Does anyone have pics or suggestions on whats the best way to build them. ( best way to bend it or use elbows and weld them on and grind it flush). Any help would be great.
how thick is the tubing? The ones I've built I used elbows and welded them on. It takes a pretty pricey tube bender to get a nice mandrel type bend on 1/4 in tubing that big.
Sch 40 pipe has a wall thickness of .203 in. My Dad picked up a hand operated pipe bender that does a nice job for $300 at an auction. You may consider taking the pipe to a shop and having them bend it for you then you can weld it together.
I've used 1 1/2 gas pipe and welded 90's on and not had a problem ramming into trees chevies or any other dilapidated pile.lol....but if you're gonna cut the pipe on a 45 degree angle then weld another piece on to give you a 45 off the ends...I'd bevel both ends you'll be welding to and also gusset them with 1/8 inch steel...if you're an arc welder use 1/4 inch plate for the gussets.....as for ideas on double tube bumpers...look at those aftermarkets they make for Jeeps the ones with the short sections of pipe every so far between the two bumper pieces.
