I need to get a few replacement hoses for the steering assist ram and to the pump. I need to know which hose goes where though. from the accuator(sp) which hose is what? a diagram would be great (million?) Thanks
I know this does not help you, but why not upgrade to a 77.5-79 steering setup?
Okay, since I've seen threads like this on here a dozen times, I just have to ask: What is it you guys have against the Highboy power steering system? Mine is original and you can steer my truck with one finger. What more are you expecting to get from power steering? Why would you go through all the expense and headache to cobble in something different and un-original to gain, what?
Not trying to be a smart-a** or anything, just wondering what the deal is. I don't get it. Of all the things I need to spend money on (like fixing my gaping rust holes) I just don't see why you would spend money on trying to improve something that works.
I power assist is a great system when it works. They are just notorious for leaking and seals going out etc. It's getting harder and harder to get parts for the steering setup. Rarely can you go to a junkyard and find the power assist pump in great shape or any other part of a system (at least in my experience). Also, the integrated power steering setups are used by many trucks and it's easier to find parts. I guess I used the 78-79 F250 4x4 conversion for my highboy just for that reason, easier to find parts, and not as many things that could go wrong with it when you look at the two setups.
the reasons just mentioned are what I say. Parts availability, cost of maintenance, and its guaranteed to leak eventually. The concept behind the power assist is great, there are many hardcore wheelers who are upgrading to a better version of it, and full hydro steering. Getting large tires to turn with a normal power steering setup leaves alot to be desired, but for the kind of duty our trucks "typically" see, the newer steering is better all around for our needs.
I know the advantages and the reasons to do the swap and that is the reason that I plan on doing it in the future, however at this moment in time I can't afford to buy the parts to do the swap. if 2 of the hoses weren't about to split then I wouldn't be dropping any money in it, but I do have to keep the truck on the road. so for now I will just have to replace the hoses and keep trying to get the parts together to do the swap. I also don't want to do the swap untill I get a hp dana 60 to swap in at the same time so I don't have to buy parts that i won't need. also I do intend on having some form of a ram assist in the steering when I do do the swap for the reasons that alot of other prople are doing that upgrade, right now for turning 35's it isn't that bad, but when I put 42"s on the truck, it will become an issue. I don't want to have a cracked frame out of the deal, so it can wait. also the system isn't that hard to find parts for if you know where to look, just expensive.

If your power assist is still working good, and all you need are hoses, keep it and replace the hoses and use your money elsewhere. I run the factory power assist with 39.5 swampers, and it performs flawlessly. I too can run down the road at 55mph and steer with 1 finger. It has less "play" than my 2003 Superduty!. As far as leaking, yes as with anything else that has moving parts, they will eventually wear out, but replacement parts and rebuilt units are readily available (although pricey). So far, I have had no leaks in the 3 years I've owned the truck.
