I have a 98 expy that is making a thumping sound wat low speed turns. It is coming from the rear, and sounds like a flat tire, or loose exhaust (thumping on the underside of the truck) but both of those are out of the question.
I have checked theexhaust, tires, brake calipers, an shocks.
Any suggestions? The mechanic couldn't find anything either...
I just had a similar problem, which may or not be yours, but I could hear a speed related thumping. If you have a rear seal leak on one of your axles, possibly/probably the passenger side, it may be your axle is bad. It seemed to me that just about the time that I noticed the axle seal, the noise began to get very bad. Replaced the axle and seal and all is good.
Thats where the trick seems to be. I found there were three axles used for my expo; and I originally bought the wrong ones. But After calling my ford dealer, I found my axles where about $180 ea, the bearings were about $20 each, and the seals were $15 each. And since Im cheap and I have a well worn rig, I used the oil I had left from another repair, left over tube of make a gasket, and the cheap $4 friction additive from my local parts house. So far no problems, which is surprising me since the oil is a mix of 80/90 dino, and 90/140 synth that was left over from the gears I had to replace a few years ago.
If you find you have the "other" kind of axle, which seems to be a little smaller in diameter than the others, I still have the pair that I would be willing to sell. They were $220 to my door, and you can check them out at roundeyes.com.
