Ford doesn't use the big/small block terms. They label their blocks as to what family it is in. The correct family for your year truck would be windsor. So if the engine is origional it is a 351w. Even though not really correct, some people refer to these engines as small blocks.

The 351 is physically bigger than the 302 but still smaller than the FE block(429/460).
The Windsor family motors started in 1962 at 221 inches displacement, and was bumped over the years to 255, 260, 289, and 302 cu inches. The 351 block was added in 1969 and while it shares nothing with the smaller blocks, all motors use the same heads and are generally considered small blocks in motorhead circles.

The 429/460 was the 385 series, not the FE. The FE was the 352,390,427/428 engine family.

thanks for all the info. i had no idea about all that other stuff. now i do. im not real big into ford gassers. i have one. but dont like it and will soon be changing it out to a cummins. i know a man that needs a 351 windsor for a 1990 1 ton 4x4 with a 351 and i am going to sell him my 351w from my 1/2 ton and use that money towards the 5.9 cummins swap. once again thanks.
