I have a 1978 ford f250 4x4 singlecab 3/4t 6.6l 400. I also have a 300amp mean green alternator. I want to install it today but am wondering about the voltage regulator and if it can be removed? I want to be able to run a camper and charge my dual optimas and the regulaor dosent allow for a speedy charge. I had a 1 wire alternator in my last truck and paid $150 or something to have a shop hook it up. I dont know what they did but they got rid of the regulator I think. Or switched them out?
What are the steps if I can do this to improve my electrical system.
I do run electric fans, Stereo system, lights camping, heaters winter (mountain) and a mess of accessory stuff through my camper.
Do I need a aftermarket regulator?
I would appriciate any ideas of how I could do this as I am far from electrically savy and dont want to "blow up my batteries." So to speak.
I looked at Dennis' link, and from what I can tell, you need your old regulator. I don't know what you are asking, since the regulator is set for about 14.5 volts, which is the standard level to charge a lead acid battery. It's just the brains of the operation, the brawn is the alternator itself. Looking on the website, it looks like the alternator just plugs in like the old one did.
It does plug in and is in now. You got my question answered. If it needs to stay in so be it. I guess I was mixing up volts and amps and not thinking about thtat question. It was mainly do I need the regulator. Maybe running a 0-4 ga cable instead of the stock one would help now that I think of it. Thanks for the info.
