I have a 71' f-100 4x4 and it runs hot about 210-250 when I drive trails or idle at stop lights for ant time. Can anyone tell me why this is ? I have installed a four row radiator/ a 170 deg thermostat/an 2950 cfm electric fan(puller) and mixed the coolant at 50/50 I am still running hot. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks JP
John is right on the money with the water pump question. If the impellor is worn or corroded away, it will not move water at the volume it should. there are two differant diameter impellor water pumps available for the FE. You might try getting a new or rebuilt water pump from Ford ( Ford's pumps are nicer than most parts house pumps ) or one from Stewart. If you get the stewart, get one with the DRV-8 impellor. If you get one from Ford, get it fot a 76 390 2wd F250 with auto and air conditioning. That should get you the biggest (volume) pump. What pulleys do you have on the water pump ? Do you have a high-flow thermostat ? I highly recommend the 195* or 205* units from Robertshaw. You can get them from Stewart. DF
You might also consider flushing the radiator and engine to see if that doesn't help. Make sure you drain your 50/50 mix into a clean bucket so you can reuse it.
