Has anyone ever heard of an FE holding 4 or 4.5 qts of oil? I just changed mine and put in 5 with new filter..started it let it run a bit then shut it off and checked the oil..it was overfilled..and I had drained it till no more would come out...then I realized its always done this I just never thought much about it...any thoughts? Have they maybe changed the amount of oil the filter holds from back in the day?
I have one FE in my 64 Galaxie that the dip stick tube was broken off and the tube was fliped over and reinstalled upside down. So when the oil was changed and checked, it read as it were over filled by one quart. What I did was changed the oil, putting in 5 qt of oil and new filter, running the engine, then after it sat and it had time to drain back, I checked the oil and marked the dip stick with the new level.
Allen might be on to something..... You might have the wrong dipstick in the engine. Might have been lost and replaced with another. Either way as advised change the oil and remark the dipstick. Back in 88 I bought a new 5.0 mustang. Changed the oil for the first time, 2 drainplugs in the pan so I got all the oil out. Changed and put in 5 qts and the stick showed 1 qt overfilled. I knew it was right so I just remarked the dipstick. Funny tho I thought. A while later I was at the dealer getting some parts and mentioned that. They showed me a service bulletin about the dipsticks being wrong and to just remark after oil change. If you have the stock pan you want 5 qts in there. Anyway you can check the part number on the dipstick if yer real curious.
this has got my attention. same ?
how much oil
have had 4 fe power plants.
2 69 f250
then changed one of them from 360 to 390
also have 67 gt 500 original. have always put in 6 qts. with filer change ph-8 or one of the smililar ones
since they were new or close to new.
kind of worried on the p/ups but dont seem to have created any problems.
It's a five quart motor. Where is the top of the dipstick tube (flange bracket) attached to ? About the only thing that makes sense is that it was broken off before, then re inserted. This would leave the flange hanging free as there wouldnt be a whole in line with it anymore. (Provided the stick is the correct part for that motor) In the long run as long as it has oil pressure in (all conditions) and doesnt get starved.. probably not an issue. Is there a great big dent in the bottom of the oil pan with an imopression of the pump/pickup in it ? LOL
lol no no dents..new after market pan actually..same issuse with oringal pan though..as for the dip stick it is correct and the dip stick tube is correct and not broken..nor is there anything broken in the block where it fits..I've checked everything cause it drives me nuts lol.
id still say its the wrong dipstick. ive seen this several times. just remark it with 5 quarts in.
dont some go in the pan, and others go in the block? i think ive seen them both ways.
in fact my 302 has a different pan, so i actually have 2 dipsticks... 1 in the pan, the other in the block.
but one reads WAY off. i attached it so it doesnt come out anymore, so no confusion.
My old 360 took 6 quarts. I since replaced it with a 390 and used the same rear sump pan. I plugged the dipstick hole in the front of the block. So I still use 6 quarts of oil.
