Howdy,
I have a 66 f100 352 2v with the ford/autolite 2100. I have rebuilt the carb and now it will not idle without a little choke. I have the idle screw all the way in and the air/fuel mixture screws even at about 1.5 turns out. The truck had a lot more problems but the rebuild seems to have fixed all but this one. It would seem that the truck would Idle fast but it stays around 750 in gear but when in park it stays at 1500 or so. what is causing this and how do I fix it?????
Thanks
Drumman
Youre problem is definitely in the carb. When you rebuilt it, were you sure to set the float at the proper level?? Not only that, but the first time you started it, did you take the time to dissasemble the top carb plate and do a "wet" float adjustment with the engine running?? Having to add choke to make it idle means it is getting too much oxygen. It is running lean at idle. Having the idle screw in means that there is a possible blockage maybe in the jets or in the venturi assy. and isn't allowing enough fuel to vaporize with the oxygen. Did you blow out all of the passages with an air compressor before you reassembled it? It sounds to me like there is still a blockage and i would bet it is between the jets and venturi. there just isn't enough fuel entering at idle.
Yes I did the float adjustment dry and wet and yes I blew everything out with compressed air. I thought the same thing, that is running lean at idle but it is rich at idle as I am getting black smoke that smells of gas out of the exhaust. could it be bad gas? It runs great except for the idle problem so I ruled out bad gas but you never know.
Thanks for all your help

Hey drumman,
Have you checked for vacuum leaks?
Have you tried setting the mixture screws out some more?
It sounds like you're still lean at idle. You can have a lean misfire and it will smell like a lot of gas is going through, burns your eyes it's so strong.
Keep backing the mixture screws out a little at a time and lowering the idle speed as it starts to run better. With the idle speed set so high to keep it running, it gets off the idle circuit in the carb and into the main circuit and then all bets are off as to where the idle mixture is set. Once the idle speed is down where it should be, about 750 to 800 rpm in park, 600 in drive, leave it in park and then try for the best setting. Both screws should be turned out the same amount.
THEN...after it is running good, turn the screws in, (makes it leaner) a little at a time until the rpm's just start to drop a bit and leave them there.
One and a half turns out might not be quite rich enough to let it run right.
Hope this helps
