are there any kits from any companies to convert SD to MAF?? I have a 94 F250 4x4 XL (5.8) stroked to 410 ci.If there are please let me know. One more question, Are there any intake sugestions???
Summit has a kit around 1k or more. Or you can find the stuff off of a 95 up f150 or I even think a mustang from a salvage yard for a lot cheaper. Be sure to get the computer out of the doner truck.
Not all 95s, I have a 95 that is SD. The general consensus is that if it is a california model, 95 should be a safe bet, but most others got it in 96. Also, it varies from 5.0 to 5.8.
The Ford kit is/was compatible with AOD or manual trannys only. It uses a 89-94 SEFI 5.0 computer(A9L/A9P), but will need "help" to operate a 410 properly. For years The Mustang guys have used larger injectors with specially calibrated MAF meters to run strokers. And while this "works fine" for drag racing applications where you don't really care what the motor does under 2000rpm, it's not such a great solution for a heavy truck that uses everything from idle on up. The reason the calibrated meter solution isn't a really good solution is because it just scales the factory 5.0 maps(fuel and timing curves) higher, when a bigger motor really needs maps with a different slope. The result is a motor that runs pig rich at lower rpms if it's dialed-in at WOT. The right way to setup the computer for a bigger motor is to use a software/hardware interface tool such as the Tweecer. It utilizes a module containing flash memory that connects to the computer service port, and once setup the modules flash ram overrides the computers onboard memory. With the software you can re-write all the maps and scalars(engine displacement, injector size, etc) to better suite the motor and match the actual components in use, and download them to the module. Examining datalogs from the tweecer as well as widebad O2 readings will assist you in dialing in the motor to run like a factory release if necessary. There's also no reason a stroker could not pass emissions tests with the right selection of coponents.
Paul O, u have beed a big help, ever heard of "Done Rite Performance" in Mich., I think.Ford Racing gave me his Phone #, the guy's name is RON, and he makes conversion kits "sd to maf" , just for my application. since I have the E4od tranny, one computer for the engine , one for the trans. the Kit is as follows: Sd to Maf Kit Engine.950$, up grade for 24lb injectors 150$, tranny computer 525$, Edlebrock performer truck intake w/ all the trimmings 690$. Ron said this will support 450 HP, what do u think about this, Paul???
Just to add in, I have seen quite a few Prerunners (actual prerunners, ie long travel setups, not just a lightbar on the bumper) made from 95 and earlier trucks that are speed density, and they flat out fly. Speed density can work just fine for high horsepower, just not higher than stock displacement, like your situation. Just something for other people to keep in mind, not everyone needs MAF.
Wayne, I still think you could get parts cheaper than that if you look around, 1500+ without the intake is a pretty good chunk of change, and all those parts can be gathered from other places a lot cheaper.
I remember reading from another post somewhere on this site, that someone salvaged a computer off of another vehicle to run their auto tranny, and it worked, but I cant remember what vehicle it was.
