Testing an Injection Pump

I think it is leaking, acts like it is starving for fuel at high rpm and is now looking for fuel at first start of the day. How do I test the pump as it has fairly new injectors, lines, and fuel filter? Glow plugs working ok for now. Thanks.

I'm looking at doing my own engine rebuild here soon. Waiting on parts at this time but I would like to know how to test the IP to see if it really needs replacement as well. If the origional IP is good, I don't see putting $400 into a new one....

The only way is to find an injection service, they have the equipment to check it out.

You could buy many new IP's for the price of the equipment you would need to check one yourself.

I put almost 300,000 miles on my original IP, the truck was still starting and running good.

Suddenly the IP went south.

After I installed a new one, I was shocked at how much better the truck ran and how much better the fuel mileage was.

I paid 435 dollars for a new IP.
Fuel mileage increase alone paid for the IP in 15 months.

hi im kinda new on here but i have a question my 7.3 is idleing rough on cold starts and smoking really bad after u shut it off it has to sit for a couple of hours cause it wont start all it does it crank can that be an injector pump prob or a pin hole in the return line its got a couple of mechanics stumped just wondering

Welcome to FTE and the IDI diesel forum.

Air leaks in the return lines usually show up as start and run for a few seconds, then stall and hard to start again.

Start OK when cold and not start when hot is usually the IP.

Rough running after a cold start can be a couple bad glow plugs, bad injectors, or a bad IP.

Does the engine run and idle OK after it warms up?
Does it start and run OK when you start it cold if you plug it in a couple hours before you start it?

it runs good but if your at a high rpmit sputters and when u shut it off it wont start until it cools done a bit uassy 2 hours or more

Check your lift pump pressure. Should be 1-5 psi

Connect a gage where the bleed valve is.

if it won't start when its hot but starts when its cold your injection pump is TOAST!!

thanks for the answer i thought it was the ip but wasnt sure ive done a alot of work to the motor is the pump easy to change
