Need help with 85 ranger

I think its the slave cylinder but not sure. If I try to start the truck in gear with the cluch in the truck trys to move. Do I have to pull the trans to change the slave cylinder? Thanks

i dont know about the ranger specifically, mines an auto. but the one i changed on a s10 was bolted to the side of the tranny like this

i imagine it should be the same setup on the ranger.

On occasion my truck would do the same thing. Of course it had been sitting out in the rain. The clutch stuck to the flywheel. If I started the truck, in gear, it moved, but quickly broke free. This has happened several times, but mostly if I don't drive for a while and there has been rain.
OTOH, the slave cylinder is inside the bell housing, mounted around the trans input shaft. They are pretty much problem free except to bleed when you replace them.
Have you tried pumping the clutch pedal to see if it will eventually work?

The master cyl. failure may case the same effect.

First, make sure the clutch reservoir is full. Then try bleeding the clutch, then drive it maybe a short distance or around the block and see if the clutch action gets worse while driving and shifting. If it gets worse like harder to shift or it won't shift, then it's probably the slave cylinder. And yes, you have to pull the trans to change the slave cylinder. It's the kind that is circular and fits around the input shaft of the transmission. And like Pablo said it's possible it could also be the master cylinder. Might need to change them both.
