It's a 93 F250 XLT with 202,000 Non turbo with 4speed auto. The truck looks good and such. Went to go look at it. The guy couldn't start it after 4 trys so he sprayer starter fluid in the begining of the intake inlet and then it finally started after that. Last time was like 3 weeks he said since last start. When it started it made like a eek sound for a second then it ran rough till idleing nicely after a few minuites. Then I shut it off and it started right up. Also he mentioned he used home heating oil as fuel for it. Is this ok or is that considered bad and could gel up? Well this is all for only $1000? Also reverse is blown and I'll have to rebuild the tranny or a new one. Just want to know if this truck is worth it or it sounds like a bad idea?
If the truck is not rusty, then, maybe, but you are looking at $2000 to have the E4OD rebuilt by a shop. Did he disable the glow plugs when he used starter fluid? If not then at the least, I would expect the engine to have cracked compression rings if he made a habit of using either that way.
I don't know what home heating oil would do to the engine or injection system, some one else will have to chime in on that one.
The description of how he started it indicates the glow plug system isn't working. So plan on glow plugs and controler. The eeeek sound could just be the belt???
Look at the top of engine and see if the return fuel lines between injectors are painted "gray" if they are the hoses will need to be replaced as this is where hard starting problems arise. Air getting into system thru small cracks in hoses letting fuel return to fuel tank.
If the price is low enough, I would consider the truck.
But I would get a local price on rebuilding the E4OD transmission and then figure another 150 dollars for new glow plugs and return lines.
From most of the posted prices I see on the E4OD rebuilds you are probably looking at close to 3000 in repairs unless you do most of the work yourself.

I you are able to do the work yourself, then it could be less than $200 for the simple master kit. Most of the cost of overhaul is in the shop time.
yea when the tranny gets rebuilt it sure does spend a lot of time at the shop. mine spent two weeks there mainly becasue he was extremely busy before i sent my truck to him. one man can only repair transmissions so fast.
It's definately driveable. The only thing wrong is the reverse. The glow plugs and controller make sence. The return lines I'll look into.
Would it be worth getting a compression test dune on the motor to check for anything else???
I am used to a 94 F350 PSD at work and theres a button we press and hold for 10 seconds on cold days to start the truck. This F250 apeared to not have this button. What does that button do actually because doesn't the glow plugs start warming up when you turn the key and wait?
None of the ford diesels came from factory with a manual switch for the glow plugs, normally they are controlled automatically. The WTS light is on when the GPS are on, when they get hot enough, both shut off signalling the driver that the engine can be started.
A compression test wouldn't hurt, but in all likelyhood, you already have a cheap price tag.
Just so you know, I doubt the price that is shown on Ebay applies to diesel trannies, they usually start at $1500. You might want to call them to confirm this.
I wouldn't bother with a junkyard one since they usually want similar prices to a reman unit. If you can find proof of the history of the tranny, it might be worth trying, but otherwise, its just asking for trouble. The OEM E4ODs are not usually reliable.
