Thermactor ports

Hi,

What do folk usually do with the thermactor ports in the back of the heads (assuming they get rid of the thermactor system)?

I was thinking they could be tapped and a bolt screwed in?

I've got a '79 460.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Rob.

i tapped my heads and installed a SS plug into them. the port is actually a stepped hole, that is there is a larger outer hole and smaller inner hole. the inner hole is sized perfectly for i think it was a 1/4" npt tap and plug. just put a lot of grease on the tap so no shavings get inside the head and into the engien.

they do make plugs to fit these holes as they are a weird size, but the tap method was easy to do.

Thanks for the info Mike, does SS mean stainless steel in this case? I would be doing this with the heads off before they were cleaned and re-built.

It wouldn't make any difference if the were stainless steel or not. They are never going to come out again, so it doesn't make any difference if the corrode or not.

you don't have to use stainless steel plugs, that is juast what i had on hand. plain steel will work also.

I just used some small core plugs. I smeared some of that exhaust cement on them before tapping them in. It's been over a year now, and no leaks.
