I am new to the idea of a winch. It would not be used very often. I would only be using it to pull other people out of the mud holes ( especially ridgelines!) (TRADER) Anyway, I was wondering which winch to buy. Which type do you all think is right for me??? Which ones do you guys have, and what regrets do you have, if any?? Thanks, Aaron.
I put a Warn chrome Trans4mer kit on my 1999 several years back with a 12000 winch (the 15000 hadn't come out yet). As far as the winch itself, I have had no problems, I have used it to pull several people out of jams and have had to use it a few times to get myself out.
I was very disappointed with the hardware of the Trans4mer kit. Several of the bolts have rusted out and have had to be replaced, the chrome on the side posts on the brush guard started to flake off. I called and complained to Warn, it was no longer under warranty, the manager there told me that they had problems with the people doing their chrome work and that they stopped offering chrome Trans4mer kits. Anyway, he told me that if I wanted I could buy the stainless steel replacements and he gave them to me at cost so I was happy with that.
Warn has the a new winch out that comes with an air compressor, you may want to consider that one. Eventually that is the winch I will go with and have it mounted on a polished stainless Reunel bumper
One thing about Ramsey is they won't sell the average guy any parts, you must have a business and a tax code to get parts. I have an older re8000 that needs seals, and a solinoid cover they won' sell them to me. They said find an authorized dealer in your area and have them fix it. That would quadruple the repair costs. If any one knows were I could get parts let me know. I want to put it on my Jeep.
go warn or go home! i have a warn and a milemarker.. i love the warn more.. but the milemarker works.. and ive seen guys use the 300$ costco winch for a long time and they seem good.. they are 8000lbs, when my winch goes bad im gonna try one.. everyone that bought the costco winch said they are slow but worth every penny.
While I like them both, you are really buying the name. I bought a BigRoc 8500 Lb with better specs than a comparable warn or ramsey. But, it was 1/4 the price. I ordered it from MaxTool for $350 delivered. I was skeptical, but I have put the winch through hell and back and she keeps on going. Its been 2 years and I have well gotten my money's worth. If it gives out tomorrow, I would not hesitate to buy another.
Just my opinion, but I don't think an 8,000 is enough winch for a Superduty. A 12k, or at least a 10k is a much better choice. If you go with an 8k, better invest in plenty of blocks and extra cable.

I agree- 12k is better, but an 8k winch with a good pulley and 100' of cable will pull just about anything out. Here is one of fleabay like the one i put on my trailer Item number: 130145710838. I have pulled 14k with that winch. Unless you are going to be winching up to 20k, 8k is enough for most practical purposes.

With a return block an 8k will do anything you want, if you have enough cable. I've had the whole spool extended, plus my buddy carried an extral coil which I don't remember the length, just to reach an anchor point. Point is, by the time you buy the extra cable and return block, you can just about pay the difference in winch prices. On the other hand, you ought to have the extra cable anyway, but you might want twice as much with the lighter winch. Either way, that extra cable is a PITA to haul around. Of course, most of my offroading is in the western mountains where trees are rare. That's an important consideration.
I ran offroad stuff for a long time, and saw many winches die. 8000# is only for lightweight rigs, like jeeps and toys. 12000# would be my minimuim for a SD. If you want to maybe help someone else out occasionally and some light utility work here and there buy whatever cheap piece of junk you feel comfortable with. If you want to know you can always count on your winch to get you home, buck up and buy a warn. If you take care of them you'll never need to buy another winch. Theres lots of people wishing there old m8000's would die so they could justify buying one of the newer models but they just keep pulling. Check out some winch competitions, if it's electric it's a warn.
So, if you do buy a winch, do yourself a favor and buy a ****** Block, tree saver, dedicated gloves, maybe a cable arrester and an extension as well. I'm fond of the ARB stuff, it's really nice. With a ****** block you can do 10x as much stuff with your winch. And fellas, take care of your cable. Don't kink it or hook it onto itself, make sure you re-wrap any new cable under a load (its loose from the factory and will cut itself if you don't do this). The serious folks run winch rope, once you try that stuff you'll never buy cable again!
I don't think anyone mentioned putting an 8000lb on a Super, they were talking about winch prices in general, another thread misunderstood. Warn vs ramsey, just remember parts are a factor with Ramsey, because all winches eventually break. Woops!! now everyone is going to tell me "thier" winchs won't break.
hey any winch is better then no winch, now if your mr moneybags and got a brand new superduty your wheeling every day sure a warn 16.5k warn would be wonderful to get you to your million dollar mansion on the top of a remote moutain top.. but for your average joe that wheels once or twice every few months. the 300$ costco winch that hauls 8000 lbs is sufficient and i believe it comes with a ****** block even!
