I recently bought an 05 ford f-150 5.4l 4x4 super crew. I have driven chev truck's for years but the new ford simply put is more solid than a chev or dodge anyday. I only have one problem. The gas mileage is horrible. My 85 chev blazer 4x4 with 330hp 350 and the th350 with lift 4" lift got better mileage. I see people adding programmer's but what really work's. Would header's and cat back help. Are the new ford's(07's/08's)getting any better mileage?

If you are comparing a stock F150 to the blazer, I'm tempted to say that something is wrong with your F150. I had almost the same Blazer (yours wasn't dark blue with a black top was it??) and it would do 10-12MPG. My F150 with some lift and 325-60/18's is still pulling in 15-16MPG during freeway cruising. That doesn't sound like a lot of MPG's better, but considering it is close to a 40 PERCENT improvement, that is pretty substantial.
Check around on the forum - mileage is discussed pretty much daily. Based on what I've read and experienced myself, expect around 15MPG, if it is substantially lower, you might have some issues with your truck.
Keeping the tires aired up and adding a tonneau if you do a lot of freeway driving will be two of the easiest / cheapest ways to boost mileage. But when it comes down to it, a gallon of gas is only going to push a 6,000 pound brick about 15 miles down the road.
Seems to be the biggest drag on mileage is the driver in these trucks. The drive-by-wire throttle is a little touchy, just hitting a bump when not in OD can cause RPM changes. Also, they are heavy for a half ton, so a lot of stop and go will eat fuel quickly. Larger than stock wheels and tires also seem to reduce economy. That said, my '07 has averaged 17.6 since new (6k) and all of the recent tanks have been over 18 mpg, so reasonable economy is possible. Use cruise as much as possible...

It would be helpful if you told us what mileage you are actually getting. Method of calculation?
