Does anyone know the specifics to replacing these? I have them on order but I want to know if it's just an unbolt and replace idea or if there is more to it then that.
I just changed my radius arm bushing the other day on my 95 2X4. Passenger side was bolted on drivers side had one bolt and three hard a-- rivets. I tried cutting them off with a cold chisel and hammer(distroyed my chisel), then I tried my Bosch chipping hammer for concrete(they only laughed at me), went to plan "c" pulled out my 4" angle grinder and got er done. Ford says to drill an 1/8" hole, then 3/8" hole and chisel and hammer(wish I had checked them first). You have to be careful and not grind anything you need.IE brakelines wire harnesses etc..The two rivets that look to the ground that are close together need to be drilled to accept 9/16" bolts all the others need to be 1/2" use grade 8 cap screws and lock nuts. I found mine at the local hardware store in those little plastic drawers you pull out and open the lid. Don't forget to block your wheels the radiusarms can get unruly if your truck rolls a little. You probably wonder why I didn't just unbolt the arms from the axle. Well I didn't want to buy a torque wrench that would go to 350lbs. Good luck.
I forgot to add this torque the 9/16" bolts to 140ftlbs. and the 1/2" to 100ftlbs. Also those bolts and nuts are the same kind that hold your cross-members and such on they have a flange on the contact surfaces, color black, don't try to use lock washers and regular nuts not enough contact area where the parts come together. You don't want them to slip and throw out your alignment everytime you hit a pothole.
I guess I lucked out, I took a good look at the mounts today and both are bolted on.
I get the mounts tomorrow morning and I already have the new bushings, So my next question is do I need to jack up the truck? can I just unbolt the mount? do I need to support the arm?
Can I just unbolt the mount unbolt the bushing, replace the bushing and mount and bolt it back up?
I did jack mine up and put it on jack stands, and the arms aren't under any load you can move them around to do what you need to do. Be sure and treat the bolts with penetrating oil. I would give them a shot tonight and again about an hour before you begin. The two larger bolts on the bottom are connected together at the top and can be a pain it they break loose from the connector. Don't forget to block the rear tires in front and behind or you will have trouble with the arms. Yes. Just leave the bushings a little loose so you can position the bracket, after you get both brackets torqued then I would let it down and torque the bushings. My book says to torque the bushing to 80-120ftlbs. I went with 100. I torqued mine while it was on the stands and when I let it down the rubber washers on the backside moved off center so I loosened them up and retorqued them.
