Hi All,
My 1999 F350 4X4 with the gas V10 hasn't been driven much (17000) miles. Last week I suddenly developed an intermittent problem where the speedometer/odometer stopped working. At the same time, the automatic transmission wouldn't shift properly and the truck was barely drivable. The next day everything was fine again. I'm wondering if it is the speedometer sensor in the rear end or some digital component up front. I'm only guessing, so any expert help is much appreciated. Thanks. Larry
Being it affected the speedo and tranny, you are probably correct. The VSS is your culprit. You may could just remove and clean it. The magnet will get caked up with small metal particles from the rear end and throw the sensor off. I did mine at 100k miles.
I'd say it's you VSS, there pretty easy to fix. Unless you own a dodge ram like my buddy's, the rear diff, decided to eat the VSS sensor, they had to replace the whole rear end; do to all the little bits of sensor in the gears.
Thanks to all who replied. I'll see if I can locate the VSS on the diff and swap it out, since that's the cheapest thing to try. I'm hoping it's not the PSOM or some other component that uses the VSS data.
