Wife drove the truck last weekend - ya I know, mistake #1
Anyhow, she said the check engine light came on. When I started it, all seemed fine and no CEL. Pulled 2 codes today:
33 - EGR valve opening not detected
172 - HEGO Sensor circuit indicates system lean (right side)
I have a hairline crack on drivers side exhaust manifold and am thinking this may be related to 172.
Can anyone help me figure out what the problems are?
It means your EGR valve is not opening or the EVP is out#33.
How old are your O2 sensors? If more than 2 or 3 yrs. they may need to be changed#172.
That should clear it up. This website can give you a better understanding. www.fordfuelinjection.com
My manuals procedure is pretty involved IE it would take forever to copy it all. I am sure someone posted about this not long ago try a search and see what comes up. (I think there is an easier way to test them than my book describes). I didn't see the part about the cracked manifold before. Is it leaking? You can get those at a wrecking yard cheap. It could warp a valve this Winter if it lets in cold air. I let one go once until a section of it fell out, I took it off and it was in three pieces.
Before you throw away a lot of money on sensors and EGR components, study the stuff about them on fuelinjection.com. You also should buy a Haynes "Ford Pick-ups & Bronco '80 thru 96' "
The Haynes has a testing sequence and proceedure for the EGR system. Many times it's a bad connection or a vacuum leak.
33 code shouldnt even set off the cel, or maybe im wrong, i got code 33 when i didnt have vac hose hooked up to egr never set off the lite, but my bad 02 sure did! p.o welded in the o2 sensor and must have fried it doing it! welded a bung on my collector and havent had lite since

Ditto
When I bought my truck had clipped O2 wires because PO had swapped manifold pipes from junkyard and never hooked it up. I spliced wires and the light went off and no more 172. I was still getting a 33 but no CEL, then I shimmed the EVP and the 33 went away.
Total cost.................................50 cents for grommet used for shim.
All the repair shops wanted to change O2, EGR, EVP, and EVR. Hundreds of dollars.
I would re-check those codes because you will not get mixed digit codes--they will either all be 2 digit, or they will all be 3 digit codes. I suspect your 33 is two 111s or all clear codes.

Eric, you're 100% correct!! I was sorta stumped since this code (which I thought was 33) was not repeated as it should have been. I thought the 3 first flashes were the # 3 and the next three were another # 3. I think I then got a separator blink followed by 172 (repeated). What you are saying makes total sense. Code 111 repeated which I took for code 33 not repeated. Buying a manual this aft. to help me iron it out.
