Dead Battery

i have a 65 f100 with a 352 in it and have been haveing problem one after another replaced the battery, starter, and starter seliniod. but still will not start with out a jump. once started it will run but the problem that is confusing me is if i unhook the battery the truck dies.

Any ideas on what this could be.

Thanks
Scott

Get a meter, and with the truck running, measure the battery voltage. It should be around 14 volts. If it's 12v or less, it's not charging.

Thanks, will give that a try. I have never had a truck just die from unhooking the battery. but if the alt is not charging and the bat is dead why will the truck still continue to run.

It doesn't take much to run the ignition. Try to get out of the habit of pulling the battery cable off with the engine running. You are getting by with it because you have an older truck, but put a electronic ignition on it, or a fance stereo, and you run the danger of blowing them up by doing this. Needless to say what you can blow up on a newer vehicle with all the computer stuff on it.

could also be a bad ground at the block or bad battery connections at the battery

This is the diagram if you have a factory ammeter in the dash. If you have a "gen" light in the dash, then it takes a different diagram.
