I have a 2007 F250 6.0 SC XLT that I bought new in May and now has about 1,000 miles on it. It has been leaking from what appears to be the bell housing area from day 1. Probably 2 drops a week hitting my garage floor.
I have read on here about some of these leaks going away by themselves. Would you recommend taking it in for warranty repair?
I would say yes. You spent a lot of money on it so I would. If it doesn't really ever drip its usually some of the original grease/lube being squeezed out but since yours actually does drip it could be several things on the 6.0 above the bell housing or the housing itself. Use that FoMoCo warranty while you can.
I'd wait a few thousand miles first. In my experience, local attempts to fix it (5) made it worse. Give it a little time in case it subsides on its own.
I agree with 4X4Mark.. Wait on it, you have 5 years or 100K to get it fixed. I rushed right in with my '03 and every time they touched it the leak got worse. My '06 has been wet around the bell as well, same as how the '03 started out and I havent let them touch it and it hasnt changed at all. I agree that it is frustrating to spend so much and buy an oil leak but If Ford and International, who well know of the problem have not addressed this problem which has existed from day one a dealer is not going to permanently fix the problem. It's your truck and your dime so the choice is yours. Myself, I just get under the truck every now and again and give the bell a little wipe off.
Apparently nothing new on IH/Ford diesels. My 94 IDI has a small drain pipe built into the bell housing inspection cover. Always has a drop on it when parked.
Appreciate the feedback. I think I will hold off and see what happens. I have 4 1/2 years of warranty left and the leak isn't causing any problems. I think I'd rather have a leak then attempt to get it fixed and up with another problem and still have a leak.
Other then the oil leak, I couldn't be happier with the truck. I hadn't planned on getting a new truck yet...but I got a really good deal on the 07 as they were making room for the 08s. I have been really impressed with 6.0 and how well it is matched with the Torqshift. It has been a big improvement coming from my 05 with a 5.4 and a 6 speed, and much better fuel economy
My '05 leaked from day 1 also. Dealer tried to fix it many times, and finally pulled the engine and resealed everything. The truck runs fine and no more leaks in over 2 years. I guess it's your choice, but I figured since all the repairs were under warranty, what's the real risk?
To me, it all depends on your dealer. I would give it a few thousand more miles personally. I had a wet bell housing that never hit the ground that i know of and at 15k miles i wiped it clean and at 21k it is still dry. If it turns into a problem i would make sure the diesel tech that is going to work on it knows what he is doing.
