I have a 97 psd with 230k, 5spd,,,,,Just bought it 3 weeks ago. Noticed when I first start it in the mornings it will white smoke briefly. What does this mean, it runs great so I am thinking its just alittle worn out? Also when running it through the gears if I get rpm's up to about 2500-2800 it will black smoke when I am stepping into it. Thanks for info
White smoke is usually caused by a glow plug not working. Mine does the same thing and I have 1 bad. No problem at all. Will run great forever. As far as the black smoke it is usually caused by a chip or different injectors installed which is a good thing. The 10K mod will cause it to do it also. Basically when you have black smoke when you are getting on it is a good thing. More smoke = more power.
No problem. Sounds like the truck is in good condition. Let us know what you want to do to it and we can help. You can check to see if there is a chip in it by removing the emergency brake (3 bolts) and looking at the back of the pcm.
The 97 I had would also puff a little white smoke when would first start up and it ran fine for me with 250k on it. However, my 97 would also puff a little black smoke with just a 4inch straight pipe on it and nothing else done to it. It was bone stock when I bought it. Enjoy your truck, I regret getting rid of mine everyday.
Dont let your bad GP sit to long, when the don't cycle they get carbon build up, and over time element can get big enough with carbon that it will not come out the hole, some will even break the element off inside the cylinder when trying to extract it and they will have to fish it out another way. This is something that doesn't happen quick but will happen
