6 speed and shift points.

I took a ride with my Dad in my truck the other day and he commented about me reving the engine too high before I shift. I know that the 7.3 isn't a high reving motor so I tend to shift between 2000 and 2300 rpm. I'm wondering if theres a problem with shifting at these RPMs? Along that same line of questioning is it bad for me to keep the RPMs around 2500 on longer/steeper hills when I need the power?

I tend to shift at around 1500-1800 rpm , any more and your using more fuel than needed. I get better mpg cruising at 2000 rpm or less. Just my.02 .

I concur......Try shifting consistantly below 2k for a tank of fuel. I'll wager you'll see a difference. You wont be the fastest vehicle out there, but who cares!

1800 RPM is the economy shift point, If I am towing I usually go to 2000 RPM before I shift. You Don't want to lug the engine if you can help it, but you don't want to waste fuel either so You are a bit high unless you are drag racing or towing a heavy load and want to get up to speed faster.

Thanks for all the input everybody. I had a feeling that I might have been burning up more fuel then needed but sometimes that can be fun! I was just worried that I was hurting the engine by reving to those rpms. I'm going to try a tank of fuel shifting below 2000 to see how my fuel economy improves.

the only time i shift at 1800 is when its still cold, other than that I usually shift at 2500. if im passing up a hill its not unordinary to shift at 3000. when I dragged my truck I was leaving the line at 2000rpm and shifting 3200+ eachtime..was a little hard but it still runs fine.

I shift from 2000 to 2500 rpms. For towing up hills keeping the RPMs above 2K is preferable to keep the EGT's down. When you lug the motor the EGT's will sky rocket...

You can run the engine at anything under 3400 RPM all day long, every day and not hurt it. It's designed for that. The only thing it will hurt is your wallet due to fuel consumption. When towing it may actually be better to downshift even if you don't need it, to keep the EGT's lower and possibly avoid turbo compressor surge.

EXACTLY!!!
Depending on how big the engine load is, I run higher rpm.
Feather-foot throttle gets shifted early.
Lead foot - let it rev.

I usually shift around 2700, but take it to 3200-3400 once or twice a day.
