flat head V8

Looking at a couple of early F1 trucks. Any comments on the fuel consumption of the flat head V8s. Are these realistic daily drivers?
Thanks

Fit it with an overdrive, and I would think they should get about 20 on the highway, in stock form. Hopefully a flathead expert can jump in and clarify.

What I do know is that their sound is unbeatable, and if you build it right, it will be reliable and stand up to years of service.

There are a couple of people on here who really use their flatty-powered trucks as daily drivers, and with good succes. (MTFlat for one) . To get away with that, you need to keep up with maintenance, which is not insignificant. Proper gearing helps a bunch. An OD is not in the cards without major surgery on Bonus Builts (48-52) because of the rear crossmember. Changing the rear axle to a 3.25 or 3.50 is a good compromise and a lot easier. There are other considerations to driving anything 55 yrs old on a daily basis, but I hope to get close to that shortly. Maintenance is so much easier and cheaper than on a newer car/truck that it is worth the sacrifice. Mileage is generally 14-16 mpg, nothing to crow about, but not the whole story as far as total cost/mile...

Yes they are realistic as far as gas mileage but I'd be more concerned about finding parts when something like a fuel pump, water pump, generator, voltage regulator, starter, fan pulley bearing, or even a 6V battery goes. You can't just walk into your local parts house and get this stuff off the shelves. A lot of parts can be had within a few days, however.

Flattie sound

How true, on the sound - I called a guy who was looking for a flattie, to see if he was interested in buying mine...he was putting one together, to put on a stand in his garage - no truck/car, just the stand - so he could hear it purr every now and then!
