First of all I have an 04 6.0 FX4 cc with 50k miles and currently no mods. While driving, the engine lost a lot of power and it's hard to explain but it sounded like a gas engine was reving up where my tubo should have been whining. you know the sound when you have the hood up on a gasser and rev it up and you mostly hear the fan. Thats what it sounded like when throttling up. It gave a code P0198 (engine oil temp high). After sitting off for an hour, it ran normally but with the check engine light on. I'll definately be taking it in to the dealer, but I would like to have an idea what's going on. Any ideas?
Sounds to me like your engine oil got to hot and the engine detuned itself to keep from causing damage. The loud noise you heard was probably the fan kicking in to try to help cool the truck down.
If you oil is overful it could have started to foam up and not circulate properly. This could have caused the overheating. Your oil cooler could also be plugged up and not cooling the oil properly.
This is the second time it happened. The first time I was towing a 4000 lb trailer about 65mph on the Macon bypass 3 hours into a 10 hour trip, and I had changed the oil just before leaving. I was kinda in a jam so I cleared the code to see if it was a fluke and I had no problems the rest of the trip. That was about 4000 miles ago. This time (on the same oil) I was completely empty driving through town, but I had just left a stop light quckly to mix in a little of the "drive it like you stole it" advice I get off of this forum. My oil is definately overfull. I didn't know that was a big issue before I started to research this problem. Maybe the thing to do is to go ahead and change the oil and fill it to the proper level (the min mark?). I don't want to clear the DTC in case I end up taking in to Ford. Will the check engine light clear after a number of key on key off cycles?
I beleive that the check engine light will go off after a certain number of key cycles (assuming you don't overheat again), but the code should stay in the computer until you clear it.
You may want to consider looking into a set of gauges so you can watch your oil temp more closely. The temp gauges in the stock cluster are pretty much just dummy lights, and won't move until after you are already overheating.
Gauges are on my list (it's a long list) and I'm wide open to suggestions on what needs gauges and what gauges to buy. On a side note, it's interesting that I have a Superchip Flashpaq, and both times this has happened the truck was running the stock tune, I only used the tuner to pull the code.
P0198: Engine Oil Temperature Sensor High Voltage/High Input
Fault trigger: Checks EOT for a temperature lower than a specified oil temperature expected for normal operations when EOT voltage is greater than 4.76 volts.
Jim start a new thread with your problem.
You'll have better luck than asking a question to a person that is probably not a member anymore. The thread is super old.
