This week-end my motorhome with a 460 and an E40D tranny gave me a big problem. From a dead stop we started up an 11 % grade and barely made it. The RPM stayed even, but we barely moved, about 2 mph. Got to the top and it was smoked. Got me home, but every rise or hill caused it to heat up again. Does this sound like converter problem ?
Well if it is indeed the problem, all you gotta do is pull the trans, pull the converter which just takes some muscle to slide off and then unlbolt and remove the pump and install the new one. I'm no trans pro but I'd let some other guys chime in that are E4OD pro's and see what they think. I'm more of a C6 guy which the E4OD was based on but things are a little different. The pump is a very do-able job though as long as you have a good, accurate torque wrench.
just my two cents worth but the E4OD is fairly complex tranny ie: computer controlled electronically shifted not only that if your trans heated up like you say I would be inclined to say you have caused damage beyond just the pump like bands planateries etc my suggestion would be to get a good tranny shop to look at it ! But the down side is they are expensive to repair also if you get it rebuilt ask about installing a better tourque converter and tranny cooler
