puked my new controller on my old 6.9 and the good sleding months are fast approaching us here in northern Wi and it`s almost time to hit the road again. but
i can`t remember how to bench test the gp with voltmeter to see if they are bad, i`d like to check them before i relace them as they were new last fall.this old truck has over 500,00 on her and has been used in the harshest enviroments every winter.i had a 1998 f350 but that truck could not be depended on to get to a downed trucker when the temps slid down to -50 or below so i still run this old truck for my winter semi rescues .she carries 2 big torpedo heaters /generator welder for power and on the spot welding repairs /heavy canvas tarps
to cover engine compartments while heating and chassis blankets to install so the cold/ice and grime stays off the motor. Thanks for bench testing instructions
thanks Don at subzero diesel rescue
Connect one of the test leads to the tang, and the other to the bolt, the resistance should be 2olms or less when cold. Thats how one website describes testing the GPs.
Myself, I have noticed that glow plugs tend to fail rather quickly if something is not right, so the tend to either work, or not work, so all I ever do is a continuity test. If a test light comes on bright, its healthy.
If one or two glow plugs go bad - I normally replace as a set - so the controler works properly. On most 6.9's - folks are replacing the controler with a manual switch. Dave S. our moderator has very good pics of this.
