From my experience, the difference in Ford alternators is not mainly in depth, but, width/girth.
If you want to fit a higher amp alternator in your Ford, here is what I did. For my 1980 E-150 I-6 (RIP) I went through the RMP book, selected alternators by AMPs, then picked one that matched up on the ears, then replaced my voltage regulator too. It has been 10+ years, but, I think the 100 amp number was D9VY and it was for a Mercury car.
Th easiest way is to pick one for a large luxury car with the same size motor as your truck. Failing that, guesstimate.
The brackets to mount the alternator low on the block are found on many pickups, and Galaxies with FE motors. Then install a 85 AMP Delco one wire and forget about alternator problems. I eliminated the weak Ford alternator, 36 year old wiring harness and voltage regulator with this swap over 23000 miles ago and have not had a problem. To get more detail search the electrical section for Delco Alternator Install.

Thanks, that's exacly what I wanted to hear. I can watch my batterie die when I turn on all my accesories at night and it makes me sick. Plus, all that wiring gets in the way of my soon to be beautiful engine compartment. :-)
